CCV Hose to Dip Stick - HELP

Hi -

I am actually close to resolving my vac leak which I've had for a long time. I was about to pull the intake manifold, but then found the massive 90% tear in the hose from the bottom of the oil separator to the dip stick. I actually have a ton of parts for the job, and a whole new CCV kit (but I dont want to do the whole job right now - its hot summer, and I got guests coming over).

So I got my old hose out, it was easy and I used a razor blade to coax it off both sides. I did not crack the old oil separator. But on mine, on both sides it just a press fit onto a nipple.

I went to look at my new kit and get the hose, but it seems like its a new designed with some connector...

part # on old hose is BMW 1 438 195 maybe a lower case b

Any thoughts? Can I just go buy a hose from Autoparts store? What size...

Thanks.

ok, I now see that the hose is attached to the connector which attached to the bottom of my oil separator. I dint think I can get the connector piece on, so might just try and get a new hose. The damn hose that came in my kit is too short regardless...

cant seem to get the connector off the old oil separator with everything in place, its super tight... also cannot get the new hose on, very little room to negotiate.

It sounds like the bottom connector with a nipple to attach a hose is still attached your CCV..

If that's the case you need to remove the hose connector from the bottom of the CCV..Press the round hoop on the connector and gently pull down.

Then put the new hose on.

easier said than done, when the intake manifold is still on. I could not get the bottom connector to come loose... I was finally able to get the new hose back on 2/3s of the way to the connector. I figure - if it comes off, I will know it - misfire, lean codes or poor gas mileage and rough idle. However, I don't think it will come off. It was on snug and its not under massive pressure. Let's see... car idles much better now, can't wait to see if my gas mileage is better.

So, gas mileage is much much better now and the car is less shaky when idling in drive. I'm happy with the results.

one final question for the master. I had to cut a new hose from the oil separator to the dip stuck return. I am concerned that the hose I cut, was a little longer than maybe the OEM part. I wonder if my hose, bends up a little before it bends down, will that impact the flow of the oil. basically not allow it to flow properly to the dip stick??

I would try to keep it as straight as possible but either way the oil flowing through there is a trickle and should find it's way down as long as you're not doing loopty loops.

I also found out the hard way that the e46 CCV kit I ordered needed a slightly longer return hose for the CCV to dipstick. Kept the car on the driveway an extra couple days while I waited.

BTW, that's quite the vehicle lineup you got

thanks. next time I take apart the car, I'll shorten the hose a bit. 177k miles, I'd like to get to 200k at least!

I enjoy working on the X5 and hopefully gives me confidence to do more work on the Ferraris! which it has. I just swapped my fuel pump on the 308...

Should be fine...I think that is a vent hose more than a fluid return hose...

As long as the bottom of CCV is higher than oil return pipe, should be definitely fine.
