Sanity check on noise from 4.6is motor

Hey, just wanted to get a sanity check from the folks here on the forum on a knocking noise on my 2002 X5 with the M62.

I just picked up a 4.6is that had been sitting for a while. I actually purchased it as a parts car, but I've been looking it over and I actually think it's a good candidate to fix as a driver.

When I went to pick it up, I was informed that the owner had had the timing chains done a few years back, and a quick pop of the oil cap confirmed that. The valve cover gaskets were COMPLETELY shot and I'm not kidding there was 2 quarts of oil sitting in each of the spark plug wells so "valve cover leak" was an understatement.

Pulling the valve covers confirmed that the engine seemed pretty well maintained. No sludge in the heads, and I could see new guides and chains were tight. I meticulously cleaned everything, installed new plugs, de-greased the coils, installed new NGK plugs and buttoned everything back up.

The motor runs *strong*. No smoke on startup or idle, no hunting, and a rock-solid and smooth idle. There are no engine codes. I'm really impressed how it runs.

That said - there is a persistent knocking noise coming from (seemingly) low in the engine. Sounds similar to the vanos 'startup' noise or a very minor rod knock when warm. It's not super loud, or super concerning, but it doesn't happen on my other 4.6. I've seen lots of posts on this sound and it's clearly not a chain slap or anything like that.

It does look like the vanos solenoids are older (but the gaskets were replaced when the chains were done) and I have no idea what components were used (OEM or Amazon cheapies). I'm going to replace the chain tensioner with the updated INA version, and I'm considering swapping out the solenoids too.

Given the overall strength of the engine is this something that would worry you? There are no other signs of issues so I'm going to assume no VANOS work was done and just keep driving it.

Thoughts?
