Trifecta like Herpes, won’t go away?

If you have a trifecta on your X5 that just seems to not go away, read on.
I had sent my module in for repair. It came back and worked great….for 6 months. Since the module was overhauled, that certainly couldn’t be the problem. I tried several easy fixes. Clean the senders, recheck the module connections. All to no avail.
After many frustrating months with a dash full of lights, I made the call back to the overhaul facility. I explained my code “return pump fail”. They explained that when they overhauled the module that fault was never a problem. They offered to overhaul the module a second d time. I sent them the module and I’m awaiting the return of the module. I’m fully expecting that this repair should cure (hopefully for good) the trifecta.
If you are chasing a trifecta and get a “return pump fail” code, send your module in for repair.

It's usually the module. Unless they do a complete refurbish of all the bond wires you can expect it to go back more than once.

For my GMIII module repair, I used https://www.upfix.com
They did a good job for me. The repair was delayed due to Thanksgiving and parts needed. I'm happy with their service. I would use them again.

I used module masters.
They changed hands, but were
Responsive to my problem.
Initial cost was pricey, But free
Warranty was .worth it.

Are you talking about the abs module or the tranny module?

Regardless, just pull from the junk yard. Mine lists them as body modules and charges me 15 bucks. Then just swap and code as needed. Oh and if they are bad I could take them back to the junk yard because they come with an optional 90 day warranty..... that i never buy anyway.

Well, that was a complete bust.
I got the module back (which they say
They overhauled it and found problems)
I installed the module and started engine.
Hooray, no dash lights!!!!!!!
So I’m out burning 93 octane fuel and trying out
My newly installed Factory Bluetooth system.
So excited that the trifecta is finally gone.

I’m so happy I pull into my favorite service center for a state inspection.
All my gear head bros are admiring the rare Imola red 4.6is X5.

The lady inspector asks how long those dash lights have been on.
Sure enough, back to the G.D. Trifecta. Complete fail on state inspection.
And total embarrassment in front of my friends.

I called Module Masters back. They needed the codes from the scan.
When it was sent in, it had 1….now it has 3.

The technician tells me that when the code is return hydraulic pump…
He has NEVER been able to fix that….WTF.
WHY DID YOU HAVE ME SEND IT IN THEN??????

I bought some POS from a junkyard dawg. At least the model numbers match.

So damn frustrating!!!!!!

That really sucks. So the code is coming back as the pump.... why would would it be the module?

Well, you have the junk yard one now. Guess you'll see if you get the same results or not.

Everything goes through the module. It runs the pump, reports errors regarding the pump. It's not uncommon for the pump error to be the Achilles heel on this fault.

I hope BMW used a newer model for the e70. Wife and I switched to e70 over the past year I'll be very happy to never chase that particular strain of e53 herpes.

I'm on my fourth ABS fix

Mine started with the trifecta only in warm weather. Slowly deteriorated and had it fixed by a shop in Florida. Less than a year later it was broken again and despite the warranty they could not provide a repair and I was offered a replacement at $400..... no thanks!

Sent it to Gino at "modulerepair" (ebay) and there was some issue with the processor. I needed to get it on the road and he sent me a replacement. Coded the VIN. Three months later the weather warmed up and I had the same "return pump" fault referenced above, every time the car heated up to operating temp. Gino first had me do a few things with the pump motor contact points on the module but nothing helped. Then he provided a replacement free of charge and that has been fine for about 10k now.

Funny story on ABS problems, a friend of mine had an ABS fault on his Accord, dealer offered a fix for $2900!! Car is a bit old to warrant such an expensive repair. I took the module off the car but a repair shop in NYS could not find a fault. I reassembled the ABS unit but could not keep the car longer. Fast forward a couple of months, I downloaded the Honda SW for the Foxwell and decided to take the pump motor off the valve block. Pump motor was a bit tight to turn but testing it with 12V it seemed fine. Once reassembled, I noticed the ABS light went off. Reset the VSA and gave it back to him.

Now the fault on the Accord comes back intermittently and I bet it is the funky metal strips that connect the pump motor to the module. The spade connectors either end seemed loose to me and I guess my gut was right. I need to get it back from him for an hour so I can disassemble and tighten the spade connectors for a consistent power flow to the pump motor. In the end this is not a near 3k fix but an hour or 2 labor to get the module off and tighten the connections to the pump motor. My friend owes me a couple of six packs when all this is over :-) Lesson from all this: There seem to be a bunch of failure modes for ABS units and it is not always simply the electronics failing.
