2006 E53 N62 4.4 Coolant Temp Sensor Question

My wife's car has started failing to start, and occasionally the temp gauge shows all the way to the hot side. I can reset the fault with the scanner, and get her back on the road when needed. I have searched the catalogs for a coolant temperature sensor, and some places show that there is one in the radiator hose and one in the thermostat. Does anyone know which one this would be?

What did your live reading of temperature say? I ask because you didn't say if you had zero readings or just reset without doing a live test.

The gauge is a 3 position idiot light (not warm, good, warped heads)

I don't remember exactly, but it was either zero or very low. I remember that it was not anywhere near hot, or warm.

I will recheck it when the gauge goes all the way to the right.

I had the exact same issue on my 2006 4.4l x5, the PO installed aftermarket sensors which were causing false readings and causing the car not to start because of "overheat issues" which it did not have, get VDO sensors and you'll be fine.

The one that goes into the thermostat and has 4 poles (4 wires) I believe is the culprit, I did change out the one on the lower hose too, thats the fan switch.

EDIT: I misspoke, apologies, not the thermostat 4 pole (that does not exist) the one that goes into the water pump was the culprit. P/N: 13621703993 and the OEM is VNE not VDO. here is the FCP link I used to get it and it solved my issues. I also replaced the fan switch on the lower hose though.
