andrewwynn will become famous soon enough
I of course meant towing 20' out of snowbank etc.

The clutch can take the abuse but just like launch from a red light you can definitely burn up a manual clutch whereas torque converter can definitely take the abuse a little better.

Great work! I don't think the manual is bad for towing at all. First gear is so short that you hardly slip the clutch at all. (Mine is a 5spd but I assumr yours is even shorter)

I am guessing no WDH? I don't get any push with my trailer, but I used a WDH that I think makes all the difference. It is extremely stable when towing.

No WDH. Keep in mind that most of my towing life has been with a 3/4 ton diesel truck. So when I describe trailer push, I’m talking about a pretty mild effect. My truck weighs about 3,000lbs. more than the X5, so it’s not a surprise.

The gearing of the 6MT is the same, I just have an overdrive gear. Getting off the line is no problem, although reversing uphill on ice really would have benefited from a low range.

I did need an assist for this bit, though.

I wasn't planning on snow when I put the trailer up there.

Also, the trailer had two tires down on the left side, which didn't help. (For the record, the trailer got 4 new wheels/tires before hitting the road.)

Wow, that looks treacherous.

I have to back uphill into a camp spot about once a year, and it's a bit tricky, but it gets the job done every year.

Sorry, by "push" I thought you meant when turning. But you meant braking. Do you have proportional brakes on that trailer?

How much does the trailer weigh when fully loaded with the race car?

That picture doesn't really convey the slope. Luckily, we had a tractor handy, so I got a little push from that to get the trailer unstuck and then we were good. (If I'd had a correctly sized ball for the tractor, I'd have used that, but that wasn't an option. And it's one thing to half ass a pull uphill and rely on the chains to save you, but the next step was to go back downhill, so...

No, you were correct. I meant turning push. Braking was no issue.

The trailer is a little under 5,000lbs. like that. (It's pretty heavy as open trailers go with the full deck and all steel.)

One thing that is worth noting is that the X5 was a lot better "off road" in these conditions than the other vehicles that we had available. I explicitly avoided taking any of the heavy diesel trucks that we had on site off the road because this was snow over ice over relatively soft ground. This didn't stop the guys from burying the F650. That was a fun one. They had to yank it out with an F350 getting a running jump repeatedly. The tractor just spun and definitely didn't have the mass or the speed to yank it out.

(Picture is the X5 and my truck.)

There's hardly any sag on the rear with the trailer on! Does it have the rear SLS?

No SLS.

The hitch dropped a little over an inch with the trailer on it. Might have been a little bit light for tongue weight, but it drove fine.

If I were serious about the X5 as a tow vehicle, I'd probably look at an SLS retrofit. It looks like my configuration has the wire harness, so it's doable.

Didn't all of the facelift cars have rear airbags? Do they not level themselves? I thought the only cars with four-wheel coil springs were early models without the sport package.
