3.0i 6MT Towing: Expectations Exceeded

I have to say that it's a far better backup tow vehicle than I expected. No, it's not as good as my 3/4 ton diesel truck. But, you know what? Most of the time, I was cruising at 65-70 in 6th gear. Not bad for a dinky M54.

Stability was also quite good. The only real negative was that I could definitely feel a bit more trailer push in turns.

My wheels make three difference partly in jest but I had very good results using those wheels on my m54 powered e53.

I also did tow a 4500# cherry picker once; the rental agency wouldn't let me leave until I pulled up reference showing the platform is good for 6000#. He never saw a non full size pickup tow that big of rental equipment.

That 4.1 final gear makes all the difference.

Here's an e70 exceeding towing expectations.

I wouldn't try doing that with the manual. I don't like driving automatics, but that's definitely a case where the torque converter is an advantage!

I've used manual to tow somebody. It's not awesome for the clutch but then neither is starting from zero *ever*.

Manual is fine for towing so long as you actually are able to get going. Dragging a truck out of the mud is torque converter work.
