Seems suspect.... the fluids and filter alone cost nearly that. Did you verify what they used?

I'd interpret that as a labor only charge. I certainly hope that that didn't include fluid.

I'm a frequent business visitor. Military discount is minimal. I was there when they did it. I was there for about 1.5 hours. They had a Caddy that gave them trouble. I had to wait a little longer than my scheduled time. They dropped the pan and swapped the filter. The transfer case was drained and refilled. Even I was surprised by the costs. They did my GM 700R4 for $60.00.

I ended up using a local mechanic whom I know and trust.. He allowed me to bring my own filter and fluid and charged me $150 to do the Drain/Fill/Filter replace.

I have the GM transmission. I bought the GM (AC Delco) equivalent filter and decent quality Dex VI fluid.

Thinking of 5l40e oil change. Friend of mine would have 20litres of mobil 320 atf, that is dexron iii/g. I would think that should be ok for this era of gm?

Do you know precisely what fluids they used? It's still not clear to me if your $125 included fluids or if you supplied them. I'm only questioning because, while the trans will probably be fine on most any reasonable ATF, the TC has very strict fluid specs. If they just put some TC fluid they had on hand (ATF?), then your TC may be vulnerable to improper operation and/or excessive wear. I would just hate to see your "bargain" service result in a potentially expensive failure in the future.

I'm not familiar with that fluid, but a quick glance at the specs reveals it is a pretty basic fluid that was commonly used 20+ years ago. There has been a lot of evolution in ATF's, so there are arguably better performing and longer lasting options available (likely at higher prices!) The older fluids like this one were a little higher viscosity, but also tended to shear down over time. Many of the newer fluids are slightly lower viscosity, but are very shear (and heat) resistant allowing them to remain viable longer in today's minimal/no maintenance environment.

I would say so long as you don't try to run that fluid for an extended interval, it should be fine.

AM.

Yep, specs are at same era when 5l40e was manufactured. And it would be very cheap/close to free oil. Only why I consider.

And with 20liters you could change few times.

The shop provided all the materials. I'll dig up the receipt. 10k miles since the oil change. No issues at all. They used whatever their PC software recommended. We all know that the PC is only as smart as the programmer! The counter guy kept calling it a ZF trans. Apparently, lots of V8 models have gone through the shop.
