Need advice for engine storage…

I’ve never dealt with an engine outside of a vehicle before. However, I expect to have a well-used 4.8is n62b48 on its way by end of the month. My plan is to have it as a backup were something to go tragically wrong with either of my two 4.8is engines. Another thought is that since one has 185k miles without vss done…I might just dump everything already purchased for that job into this engine instead and plan on a straight swap in a few years. ANYWAY, having no experience with storing an engine…I was browsing the best option upon removing from pallet.

Performance Tool W41037 Rolling Engine Stand with Straps for Vehicle Maintenance, Yellow, 750-lb Capacity https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002KS6FUO...VYHHRG7F70X85H

OR

TCE AT23401U Torin Steel Rotating Engine Stand with 360 Degree Rotating Head: 3/8 Ton (750 lb) Capacity, Blue https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08875B6K4...GCTGRBD5Q9Y0AQ

I likely won’t purchase from Amazon, but as you may have guessed my budget, I’m around $100.

My concerns, obviously, are staying compact, and best option for bolting up for storage with engine not at risk of being damaged.

Has anyone used either of these with this engine with success? Anyone out there want to gift me the $5000 BMW engine stand? Ha.

TIA for any guidance!

What you actually want is a furniture dolly, and some scrap 2x4 to level it with. engine stands aren't that great for long term storage.

Also, if you get a rotating engine stand to work on the engine, do NOT get a 3-wheel one. Those are OK for little engines, but BMW V8s are long, top heavy, and wide.

Something like this is a lot more stable:

This is over budget, but feels much better:

I have had an M52 on a Harbor Freight stand for years. Don't recommend it though as it is exceptionally hard to rotate... even with the M52 being considerably lighter than the N62 you are asking about. My HF stand looks very similar to the one you posted from Amazon.

Try to find a nice engine stand (preferably with a crank rotation setup) for sale on CL or FB marketplace. Probably the best way to get a decent one.

Edit: That second one that Nick posted looks ideal in terms of budget/safety.

Yeah, but I just want to emphasize that when it comes to storage convenience, it's really hard to beat a furniture dolly. They also frequently seem to have better casters than the engine stands.

I've got two engines on dollies and two engines on stands right now.

Thanks, CW. If I could get away with the rolling cradle for now, I see full range of stands on FB all the time (except for RIGHT NOW)...I pick one of the nicer ones up in the next year. That rolling cradle just looks so awkward to me! It sounds fully adjustable, but could contact points really be safe? It's a tricky visual to be sure!

Edit: As for engine rotation, all consumer grade stands will be hard to rotate if you're trying to do it with the handle. You're best off going to the front of the engine and doing a little lift-and-rotate. You probably have more leverage, and that'll alleviate the shaft binding in the stand.

Thanks. I might try and build from a furniture dolly, with custom supports, until I can find a nice stand second-hand. Both of those Harbor Freight options are not stocked within 3hrs of me AND unavailable online. Lame.

Keep in mind: The oil pan is entirely capable of taking the static load of the engine resting on it for storage. So all you need to do is make sure it won't fall over.

For my 6 cyl M54 engines I had a set of brackets fabbed up...Don't have an actual picture, but they look like these....

Once on the brackets, the engine can be bolted to a furniture dolly, etc. Or you can mount casters to the legs of the brackets themselves..

I actually just used these brackets to ship an M54 across country in a crate...The engine made it!...I now need to get the brackets back..

I got the idea from an LS1 that my friends and I had built and shipped.

OP- Do you know somebody who can cut and weld steel? I made my brackets for less than $50

Cutting/welding *could* be done by my mechanic’s shop where engine will store, but they won’t be looking to help do very much on the cheap, unfortunately.
