I purchased the official ODBII adapter and had it shipper here from the UK. I tried one of the chinese ones off ebay first and it worked once and never worked again. I think the total cost for the UK version was like $35 shipped.

IIRC the software is free.

Windows 10 has backwards compatibility. You can choose to open software in various modes. I've opened older software as compatible Win 7.0. I'm curious if not using it is what causes Win10 futrastrations.

Who sells a BMW Euro cable?

What's a "Euro" cable? The only cables I know of are
  • 1) the OBD2 16-pin to USB-A cables (for K+D-Can) which have a switch to select either early (2000-2007 X5) K-can, or later (2008>>> X5) D-can info bus lines. I bought one that only works on early models, no switch.
  • 2) There's a 20-pin to 16-pin adapter, for very early models with the round connector under hood (I bought one before I had even looked under the hood, several months before it was mine).
  • 3) And the recent models use an ENET cable (whatever that is).

I'm not a computer or software-savvy guy, so I'll probably buy the wrong cable or brick my laptop while trying to personally download programs (no one I know does any type of tuning), so I'll most likely buy a complete set-up from a company online. I'm reading a lot of posts on ALL the BMW forums concerning the matter.

I've confirmed my suspicion that I'm not a computer guy at all, where software and system reconfiguration is needed. After 5 days of trying, I've given up (for now) of trying to install INPA, ISTA, NCS-EXPERT, and whatever else is in the "BMW Standard Tools" downloads, and/or using the "installation.exe" download. Every source I try gives differing instructions, and the downloads differ too.

And, my new laptop never gives me the choices that the screenshots show on the various guides; it's a Windows 10 Home (64-bit) newest version, so the older instructions aren't valid...Microsoft has removed some user's choices. Also, I've acquired a few malicious spyware/pop-ups/Trojans on my main 16gb ram desktop while downloading (for transfer to the 4gb ram laptop via an external SSD/3.0 USB-C connection). That's why I'm giving up.

Question: is there a trusted source of a "one-click" software download of any/all of the programs I might need (preferably in a virtual machine program, too)? It seems like everybody else on this forum is either a computer wiz, or got theirs programmed before all the misinfo and malicious crap was introduced.

Which one specifically are you trying to get working? They are all different

I think I've got EDIABAS loaded???

INPA seems to be the one I've seen most often mentioned, but ISTA comes in second. I'm not really sure which one would be the easiest to use for just plain diagnostics, live-streaming, and overall understanding (hex numerical coding???, not a priority for me). Simple, but maybe deeper probing than my Foxwell NT510 Elite allows. Better graphing, too.

In "English" would be nice, and using a split screen on the laptop might give me translations or equivalents, but I don't need coding of any sort (mirrors, lights, etc.) ...not my thing.

Right now, the Android apps I use, and the Foxwell scan tool, aren't showing all the parameters I'd like to see; I just want data, and maybe foolproof controls (I do not want to delete necessary settings by accident). The simplest might be the one I want.

I did get one to actually show up on my laptop, EDIABAS. I haven't delved into it yet, but it seems that it needs extra programs like INPA or NCS-Expert to be functional. I found this guide, which I'll try next: https://nam3forum.com/forums/forum/s...iabas#post1278

I have a K-can cable with FTDI chip, so I'll try it out soon. Hopefully after I triple-check the steps outlined in the above link.

Should I scrap what I've got so far, and wait for a message from above (experienced forum members), or try it and see what I've got? I certainly DON'T want to fry my laptop, nor my DME.

Maybe - but not likely.

The thing is... these software packages were not really intended to be used by enthusiasts... they are (were) for dealer's factory-trained techs.

Not wanting to put you off but even when they are running properly, they take a bit of knowledge (and care!) to use.

PASoft (BMW Scanner) is pretty good, pretty simple and covers most of what you'll need - have a look into that.

I second this recommendation for PASoft. Doesn't do everything, but is really good on so many fronts. Lot's of utubes out there. I just bought it a few weeks ago. I am a computer idiot and couldn't install it. The Seller was very responsive, logged into my PC and see it all up. He was great. A very useful tool.

wpoll- I'm afraid I'll mess something up, so I need something simple. I'll look into PASoft, since you both recommend it.

CapeX5- I'll bet I'm more of a computer idiot than you. I never got any training in school; no PC's until after I left school...I trained on Cobol & Fortran mainframes, and none after I started working on automated storage systems just before I retired (believe it or not, my bosses chose me at 56, the only one in my department without PC experience...all self-taught, including major errors). Can you send me a link to the Seller you used?
