If you were closer, I could probably help. I'm no expert but I do have skills above common users. Would any of the above recommendations clone a GMIII module? Cloning or at least coding modules would be on my list. I've already replaced the GMIII module once. I'll probably have to do it again or a different module.

This site popped on a search a while back: https://pss-autosoft.net/

Another option I'm considering is buying a laptop with all software already loaded. Ebay has a few sellers.

which is simpler to install/use?

I've perused both websites: https://bmwpasoft.com/ for "PASoft software", and https://pss-autosoft.net/ for "EasyInstall EDIABAS - INPA - DIS GT1 - SSS Progman Diagnostic Software", and I think that the PASoft (BMW Scanner) might be better for my purposes.

While the "EasyInstall EDIABAS - INPA - DIS GT1 - SSS Progman Diagnostic Software" looks to be more all-encompassing (might be what X5chemist needs for his GM3 module cloning), the requirements for the laptop and virtual machine software needed still might be a bit too difficult for me to prepare.

On the other hand, the BMW Scanner "PASoft" website shows a plug-in OBD2 connector that requires a cable from their tool to a laptop, that they don't even have available onsite. What cable did you guys find to use? My chosen laptop only has three inputs: Micro SD port (up to 512GB), USB 2.0, and USB 3.0. I had planned to use my (proven to work on Bimmer Tool pro version Android app) K-line only cable.

I don't know if the PASoft needs to use either the USB 2.0 or 3.0 port to communicate with the laptop, and I had planned to use the 3.0 port for my 500GB external SSD, to store the program on (and all my other BMW data, etc.).

The connector shown is a USB type B. (It's a USB cable normally used for printers.)

The OBDII plug-in device will come with a cable that plugs in there, and has a normal USB connector on the other side.

Thanks, I thought it looked familiar. If the cable comes with it, is it pretty much plug & play? What port on your laptop did you connect it with?

You just plug it into any USB port on your laptop.

You will need to download the FTDI driver and then install it on your machine. I use Windows 10 and did not have to use a virtual machine to run my BMW Scanner. However, this driver installation was a bit tricky and if you have Windows 10 or 11, it will try to overwrite the driver every time it automatically downloads updates. You will have to learn how to set that driver to never auto-update, or else you will have to reinstall the driver using the same process regularly.

I had a lot of trouble with this myself - and I am an engineer with some limited background in this sort of thing. For some people it might be easy but it sounds to me like you will want someone to help you with it. Once I got it working and disabled the auto-update though, it was easy to use.

If I install a virtual machine on my laptop before
installing the program, with the FTDI driver on it, then shouldn't it remain installed where Windows 10 (or 11, upcoming) won't affect it? I'm not even sure I can install a virtual machine, yet, either.

I actually have experience with PC's, having had many continuously from '88 through now at home, and using them at my various jobs at work, doing different types of jobs, all in the same department for 46.5 years, but my employers thought I didn't need actual "training" (not even on specialized equipment, that I'd be totally in-charge of, for some reason), though my co-workers and underlings all got it; I'm sure I could use a lot of guidance here, maybe I could get a local tech to install all for me? or will Tony at BMW Scanner help thru remotes?

I don't know who Tony is or whether he will help. You may get some luck by buying your OBDII adapter from someone who offers technical support. I used this forum and one of the E46 forums to get help.

I also don't know if using it on a VM will help with the auto-updates. It seems like it would be unnecessarily complicating things though to me.

I was referring to the seller that sold CapeX5 the program.

I'm using 5-6 BMW forums and several others (concerning VM, mostly) to try and figure out what I can and can't do, but so far, I'm getting even more confused and/or finding that I can't either understand what is being shown as "guides" and that most download links I've tried are either outdated, non-existent anymore, or have malicious software imbedded. That's why I'm trusting fellow (and much more experienced) Xoutpost members for answers.

I know nothing about using/installing VM, but it might be a way to isolate outside programs from the Windows environment; I've read that gamers use it, so I assume it keeps their stuff separate from updates, etc.

This whole plan to use my laptop might be too complicated to make it worthwhile right now, as my X5 seems to be working just fine in general (various minor imperfections, codes, a doorlock malfunctioning periodically), but at some point, expanded capabilities to diagnose, examine, and rectify future (modules, especially) problems will be appreciated. The two previous owners did good work on the X5 mechanically, but the trunk wiring is a mess, and previously-installed radio/CD etc. have been removed, so I wonder what modules were also screwed with. My Foxwell is lacking in some areas, where I'd like more info, even now.

Background on the laptop purchase, and plans for its' use:
I had the opportunity to buy and try a laptop (I miss my old, portable 6GB RAM Toshiba) for cheap, and give it a good tryout before deciding to swap it with my wife's erratic Lenovo (it's slow, overloaded with bloatware and junk programs, with a keyboard that turns itself off, and which my wife inadvertently seems to install then forget passwords on). I have to fix her problems once a month, so I thought a new, clean, faster (though both are 4GB Ram) might be good. However, I like this smaller 13.3 vs 15.6 inch unit, and the fact its' processor runs cool without a fan inside (good for out in the X5), and decided to keep it myself. So, if I can install/use BMW diagnostic software on it is the question; otherwise I guess I'll try and find a pre-loaded on on Ebay, next year (my "personal purchase" Nov-Dec budget has been used up). I might be able to "sneak" in a BMW PASoft scanner, if lucky.

I seem to have made a mistake on my choice of laptop

Note the lines in bold italics; my original intent was to swap the new laptop for the old laptop, so:
  • 1) my wife could have a laptop with no bloatware or strange problems already on it,
  • 2) she could also use the laptop with a cellular connection, where wifi isn't available (several places she goes very often, usually for several days at a time), because she has photo slideshows, memorabilia, and genealogy records for her family on it, and her present laptop is dead in the water without comms,
  • 3) I bought a wireless mouse, hard mouse pad, and external 500GB SSD to accomplish those goals
which came before I really had decided nixing the swap.

But, it wasn't to be, since the new Gateway GTN-133-1bl laptop runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 850 ARM processor, and can only run 32-bit programs from the Microsoft Store (at this time), or other 32-bit programs that can use drivers native to this laptop. I had first learned of this ARM technolgy for chromebooks & laptops years ago, and their limitations (I periodically read Windows Insider, though not a member, obviously), and had assumed that the limitations would be resolved, and capabilities expanded by now, but they haven't been. I wanted a Snapdragon 850 processor, because my Samsung Galaxy S9+ phone has a Snapdragon 845 (same architecture, same family), and it is very fast and reliable. My mistake.

So, unless I can find a diagnostic set-up in 32-bit, without driver problems (PASoft seems to have driver problems), and can run on an ARM processor, then I must either go ahead and swap laptops with the wife (and solve that machine's problems), or just forget about a diagnostic laptop this year.

As we say down-under... bugger....

Yeah, you'll be needing something with x86/x64 architecture for BMW diags.
