Yep, I found out the hard way. At least her Lenovo has an INTEL processor. If/when we swap, she can use MS Store for her apps, whereas my apps come from all over (Steam, Ubisoft,Amazon...at least those on my 16GB desktop pc, with AMD Cpu and Gpu). I'm only in for $210 total, with warranty on all, so not that bad.

And about the cellular data for the new laptop...we're going to cheaper plan in January, and adding another line for the laptop will still be less than what we pay now, for two phones.

Yeah, you'll be needing something with x86/x64 architecture for BMW diags.

Man how many times I have found out that way.

Those are some of my favorite apps by the way.

I hope you get it worked out.

still going to try work-arounds that might work

I couldn't sleep last night, thinking about any possible work-arounds I might find, to enable me to use the new laptop for BMW data & diagnosis.

I surfed the web on my cellphone from bed, and found hints of programs & apps that might at least let me use Android apps:
  • 1) BimmerTool "paid version" (which I own, and have a working K-line cable),
  • 2) OBDLink (it's free, and already have their bluetooth LX dongle), and
  • 3) Deep OBD (also free, and there's actually a Windows version also, and the cable or dongle should work for it as well).
Also, links to lightweight emulators to install.

I also read on a couple of websites about Android emulators (on the Windows Store) that'll work for sure on my laptop, as long as theres a green checkmark in the description. And that's where I've encountered another problem.

I changed the "app storage" setting, from Windows (C) drive to the USB-C external SSD drive, before attempting to download the emulator app from Windows Store. There was a problem that requested a restart, so I restarted; "failure to boot" screen was the result. I went into Bios (I'm glad I had my desktop PC to look up how to fix it), and found that the boot order had been somehow changed from internal hard drive (c) to the external USB. I disabled the USB as boot, and re-enabled the internal disk? (probably eMMC) as boot, and it started up. Right now I'm creating a USB flash drive as a "Recovery Drive" device. It should fit in the 16GB stick, but if not, I'll try installing it on a 32 GB Micro SDXC I have already cleared and installed (I have
no larger capacity USB sticks or MicroSDXC cards here, and I'm not sure if I should trust putting the recovery drive on the same SSD I just disabled as "boot").

Just before I started the recovery drive creation process, I got the "upgrade to Windows 11 ready to install" message, but chose to stay with Win 10 for the recovery stick. I read on xda-developers.com website that I could create a recovery drive for both 10 & 11, for use after the upgrade, to give me the choice of either if there were problems with 11. I might do that.

I also read that developers are being encouraged by Microsoft (as far back as 2019) to make their apps work with the ARM architecture and with x86/x64 instructions as well.

Windows 11 might also be the main work-around I need, as there's an app meant for Windows 11 "Windows Subsystem for Android™ with Amazon Appstore" on the Windows Store (where there might be other apps I could use), and the emulator I was downloading was actually meant for Windows 11, anyway.

So, you guys can see that I may be computer-dumb, but I'm not a quitter (and that may be my downfall).

back to observing data using Torque Pro

I've spent many hours trying to achieve my "work-around" to get a good BMW diagnostic program on my "cheap" laptop, without any luck, so far. I even upgraded to Windows 11 Home, because everyone expects full support (someday, soon?) for Android apps (which I currently rely on) while using the ARM processors. No luck yet.

Meanwhile, I had to drive to the store for pet food and me food, since the wife is again at her mother's house, driving the X5 for the first time since T-giving, two weeks ago. I hit 211112 miles (I'm aiming for 666666),

and saw my long-term fuel trims continue to drop toward a zero baseline. They might actually get there, if it wasn't for hills & stop-and-go traffic.

Torque Pro suddenly stopped reporting short term fuel trim bank 1

On my usual Christmas Day (or should it be referred to as Xmas Day, on Xoutpost?) drive down to my mother-in-law's ranch, 106+ mile round trip from home, I was getting the usual readings on my fuel trims, balancing +'s with -'s, on the way down, but halfway back to home, the STFT Bank 1 stopped reporting, and gave no data on every screen I had it up on. I couldn't reset it, so for the remainder of the drive back, I could only observe the LTFT Bank 1, and both trims on Bank 2. Why did it suddenly go away? There were no codes set, either.

I observed the O2 sensors' voltages on another screen, and they were working as expected, so the STFT Bank 1 should've still been reported? right? I'll try another app tomorrow on my tablet, to see if it is only a problem within the Torque Pro app, and also use my Foxwell NT510 Elite scan tool to see if it will still display the full fuel trim data.

I'm a bit tired right now, so I'll rest tonight before troubleshooting the problem tomorrow am; the wife will not be back from the ranch 'til Thursday (making it another full week away from home), so I'm still taking care of her dogs (2 of 3), her semi-free-range chickens (4), her house cats (she claims 2 of the 4), her CAG-Congo African Grey parrot, and my "personal pets" (my co-dependent Dorkie dog, 2 of the 4 house cats, and between 10-16 feral yard cats (all my responsibility, she claims, but we don't have a rat, mouse, or snake problem anymore). I'm glad I'm retired...they're a handful.

I've had 9 of the ferals neutered and marked, so far (with a clipped left ear), so I'm invested in reducing their colony's growth, and with maintaining their health; I don't mind caring for any or all of them, nor even her bipolar Cardigan Welsh Corgi/Rat Terrier mix, who is unpredictable (so-called "Little Monster"), and often bites the hand that feeds him. But it takes a bit of effort & time, alone.

P.S. my overall fuel mpg rose to 16.4 mpg since the last reset, a new high. This morning, as I embarked on the trip, the mpg was at 15.3 mpg, while the average speed was at 23.6 mph. No wonder I get such erratic/low fuel mileage readings.

Have a Merry Christmas, or whatever you may celebrate.

I just spent about 45 minutes out in the X5, trying to get the STFT bank 1 data to stop working, without success. It was working perfectly from the start today, even when I removed the bluetooth dongle from the OBD port, twice. O2 sensors and fuel trim data were all working in Torque Pro.

Afterwards, I hooked up the Foxwell, ran it to check data (including O2 sensors and injectors), and scanned for codes, and all was OK. Actually, this was the first time ever that the Foxwell showed zero codes! Just one of those things.

During one Foxwell test, when it said to turn off the IHKA, I turned the fan speed to zero to shut it down, and the HDC light flashed on and off. That was weird. Are they fed by the same circuitry?

Probably a voltage spike. As fans (bearings) get old, amp usage goes up. Torque Pro is loaded on a new Android tablet. When I get a chance, I'll hook mine up for data pics.
