cheap MAF may not be a long-term solution, after all
Quote:
I've only driven <100 miles, all short hops in traffic, at ambient temperatures at or above 100F, with zero driving above 45mph, so I don't know if the LTFT's are affected or not, by the slow stop & go driving in the heat; and will the numbers keep climbing 'til reaching the absurdly high levels they were at, on the old Siemens MAF? My X5 runs just fine, at 90C/194F, with no misfires or codes in a month, but will the fuel trims stay reasonable, or should I try another MAF (it's got to be a MAF problem; if an air leak, the cheap MAF wouldn't have helped at all)?

I'll have access to my X5 late next week. I'll make myself a note to scan ST and LT fuel trims before disconnecting the battery. It's been a month since it was started. It will fire right up so I can monitor fuel trims before and after it reaches operating temperature.

Another 10 days have passed, but only one trip in the X5, for 28 miles visiting two shopping centers. Same weather as last reported, but even hotter, with the BC reporting 106-110F, and the thermometer stuck into the A/C vent hitting 120F after each shopping stop.
The fuel trims are still staying where they were last time, but fell a bit when I did 6 miles on the highway, so perhaps low, slow, & HOT driving is causing odd fuel trims. Still, no codes! I finally experienced the phenomenon: "old BMW's smell like melted crayons when hot" today, opening the door after grocery shopping. The interior was 120F, and smelled like crayons. Not bad, but odd. Time for Febreze or something. Sent from my SM-G955U using Xoutpost.com mobile app

Work on my X5 was done over the weekend. Unfortunately, I didn't remember to get fuel trims before leaving. I did hook my Creator C310+ scanner quickly. Though the X5 was not at full operating temp, Air mass reading was 16 kg/h and dropping. It was still warming up because load signal was 125.2 mg/s. Next time I go up and work on it, I'll let warm up completely to take readings with my Foxwell.

warm-up time (this week) in Texas is nearly instantaneous
I always use Torque Pro on my spare phone, hanging on my dashboard, to monitor MAF and fuel trim readings. I have the MAF set on grams/second, not kg/h; my current idle readings are 4.9-6.3 g/s typically (17.64-22.68 kg/h), which surely is better than what I was seeing previously. Where do you get a mg/s reading from?

The Creator has the reading right below Mass Reading. I don’t know if I can change it. I did have my Fowell but it was loaded for my trip back to Texas. Hope to go back in 1-2 months to finish the suspension refresh and oil pan leak.

update on cheap MAF and fuel trims, prior to inspection
Three quotes from previous posts, to refresh memories, as it has been awhile since I spoke on the subject:

Temperatures outside were mid-80's, so it's not the hot weather causing odd fuel trims. I can only wonder why I've not seen the cheap MAF cause a new fuel map to set, where the LTFT's are at or around zero (my '04 Chevy 2500HD & '09 Chevy HHR Panel both have consistent zero LTFT's displayed). I could reset them to zero, by pulling the connector again, but then I'd have to complete "drive cycles" before the inspection, in the next two weeks (it took me 300 miles of driving to complete the "drive cycle" on the HHR last time, and over 500 miles on the 2500HD, three years ago). I'm still considering getting another cheap MAF from the same mfg., as a back-up and/or for further testing, AFTER the inspection. I never got the OEM Siemens MAF that I was going to test with (hello Andrew???), and money is still tight (I could never justify -to the CFO- buying a $200-$360 MAF as long as the $22 MAF is still working). Xchemist- can you give me your current MAF and fuel trim readings? Do your LTFT's ever zero out?

Sure. I'm actually driving the X5 today. I'll take a few snap shots when started, short ride home (10 miles in heavy traffic), and idle for a few minutes. I don't have my Foxwell. I do have the Creater C310. It should read out trims. I do have the OEM MAF too. I can install it later this week for numbers too.

workingonit,
Here are pics of fuel trim readings. Short term trims stayed the same from cold start up to full temp. Almost 0. The long term fuel trims stayed almost the same. -3.0/-2.4 ended up at -3.7 for both front and rear cylinders. -3.0 trims align with a 3.0 L engine. Average city MPG is between 15-16 on consumer1 readings. For highway driving 75 MPH - 23-25 MPG. The best recorded MPG is 24.3 on an actual fill up.
