Wayne hola, hope all good, is my logic floored here? what does removing the vac line from the egr side of things do>? stops the actuator for egr working and the egr valve stays open or closed accordingly as such ? i removed the vac line from the side nearest to the egr and it made no difference to boost, so would this point to the actuator closest to the turbo possibly being the issue? on another note look at what where this russian fella nailed the actuator, to be frank makes much more sense than where it is located now ....

I replaced this actuator next to turbo, no change.
The best solution would be someone revving the engine to the whistle point while you inspect the engine bay, so you can figure the area of the leak. Will try that soon |

As wayne mentioned its a noise you get when easing off of pedal as turbo releases excess pressure ..anyhow will get to bottom if it oneday

The only way the EGR valve will reduce boost is if it is very choked with carbon - which does happen in some cases (lots of cold, short runs). I'm guessing your mechanic checked/cleaned this during the exhaust manifold replacement (or it has been checked/cleaned at some other time).
They normally look like this (on the left) and after a clean on the right... When left too long....

Wayne been a while hope all is well, right 10june day off for me and also my birthday yup getting long in the tooth, and needed to pick something up from out of town, road and scenery & weather combined with the correct music made me floor (nearly) the x5, for a couple of mins....low and behold my characteristic low pitch whistle came back! accompanied by boost at sub 2000 rev range ! dunno for how long it will be the case but jeez what the hell could have 'fixed' this?
PS 4 days down the road still ok Quote:

Another Gemini - me too!
Sounds like you've done an "Italian Tune-Up"... Given that the level of boost is controlled by the VGT (VVT) system, maybe the actuator was jammed but has freed up somehow.. Can't see how but I can't think what else could account for a sudden change.
