low cluster, no MID; how to reset fuel gauge thru BC or Foxwell
Quote:
If I can't reset the gauge thru the OBC, then is there a Foxwell function that might? I'm slowly learning the ins & outs of my NT510 Elite, but I haven't seen any fuel gauge reset items. I do have two mystery KOMBI faults, that are always there, won't reset, but don't trigger the SES light. Might the newly-misreading fuel gauge (only reads half-full) have been foretold by the KOMBI faults? I've driven very little in this X5, 700+ miles, less than 2 miles per day, average, and have only filled the tank four times now (topping up to full, and never let it go under 3/8) in just short of a year. Only using top-tier premium gas, shouldn't the fuel system be OK The previous owner said he replaced the "fuel filter assembly" last year, and all problems I've had popped-up, starting at five months into my ownership, so I can't really connect the dots/trace the provenance of "new" fuel system problems I'm having, now. I've had/have other vehicles in my driveway with less usage and less problems. It's always something, always things I've never encountered on any other vehicle; I'm looking for a quick-fix or workaround while trying to fix the main problems, recurring for the last six months, P0171+P0174 codes

The obc is accessed with the odometer reset button. Test 21 is the reset you seek. Unlock with 19 first.

It worked. Thank you. I need to find the list I saw of all the tests, so I can try them

will there be unforeseen consequences? or nothing to worry about

I read some posts from years back where a guy warned people not to do it https://xoutpost.com/377171-post17.html, because it resets all the software. I haven't started it up, yet, so is there a chance that learned behavior in the modules will go back to factory settings? I had trouble with two vehicles that had a long learning curve to regain acceptable throttle response (both drive by wire), and another that had different braking characteristics for awhile. I'm sure the X5 can relearn if necessary, but I was going on another 100-mile drive tomorrow with the wife, and really don't need any quirks to surface while she's in the X5. She opposed me trading for it, and any or all time & money I dedicate to it.

Depends what exactly you reset. If you just reset fuel adaptation that's a nothing burger. Reset transmission learn without actually replacing anything that will take longer to get back to normal but not really a huge problem

I just clicked on it when reset appeared
Quote:
My gaze had been fully focused on the fuel gauge, and not at the pixels on the dash screen. I don't know if it read 21, 21.1, 21.2, or 21.x; I simply thought it was just there to reset dash gauge errors (is it?); I don't know if it may have reset anything else. Just asking. P.S. I found the list, Accessing the service & diagnostic modes on OBC.....pdf and if the E53 and E46 computer functions are the same (and I read elsewhere that they are), then #21 has NO sub-categories...it simply resets the entire OBC, and I've no idea what that entails. So, I'm not driving it tomorrow, but will be making short spins around the block (my "block" choices are either 1/4 miles, 2 miles, or 5 miles (depending on which direction I turn, and/or my confidence level in the X5 at that time. I hope I didn't "screw the pooch" on this one.

low cluster, no MID; how to reset fuel gauge thru BC or Foxwell
OBC reset is just the dashboard nothing to do with engine/transmission. It will reset clock and all driving feedback like mpg/dte/fuel etc. The main point of using is to get the fuel gauge to read correctly after a fix since it uses a long term average for calculating the value for the dash needle.
I had a defect in my float sensor. On one side it read empty for a while. I didn't notice because I was only filling 1/2 tanks. Then I went on a road trip and when I filled up the needle went only to ²/₃ tank. When I fixed the level potentiometer it still wouldn't read a full tank until I hit test 21. It then instantly showed a full tank. I'm sure that given enough time it would eventually read correctly without 21 reset but best to reset it you ever work on fuel sending unit.

Reason #72 for NOT removing a MID unit (at least, without replacing it with an Android HU and the iBus adapter/app).
