GM transmission gear selection shaft removal

Hi,
Wondering if anyone has removed the gear selection shaft on a GM transmission? Looks to me like after removing the roll pin from the shaft on the gear selection switch inside the transmission there is not enough clearance between the transmission and the front drive shaft to slide the shaft out. Has anyone tackled this before? ( To bad BMW shutdown the TIS website). Thanks.
Steven

I think he's trying to remove the shaft not replace the seal. Maybe a seal replacement gone bad ??

Thanks guys. You are both right. The seal replacement went bad and now I’d like to remove the shaft. Just got back from the garage and the drive shaft is in the way. So I will need to drop the drive shaft at the front, have never done this. As per seal removal, I bought it on amazon, a GM transmission seal remover and looks like it’s made by PMD Products. SKU 9150. When I tried to use this tool it could not be screwed into the seal. I tried to gently tap it but it just pushed the seal further in. Looks like this tool might be slightly too big to grab the seal. My next step was i dropped the transmission pan and removed the roll pin from the selecting switch. When I tried to pull the selecting shaft out, it hits the front drive shaft. I might try my local Napa store for a similar tool made by a different manufacturer.
Thanks.

Here's the seal tool I used on my 2001 3.0i several years ago. I recall it took some finesse, but I got it done. Pretty sure I got this at one of my local NAPAs.

Thanks for the pictures. In my previous post I tried to attach a picture of the one I used but the pic was too large and I was too tired to reduce it. Your pic looks the same as the one I have even the packaging looks the same. Tomorrow I will call the local Napa store and try to get the exact same one you have. I don’t really feel like dropping the drive shaft if I don’t have to.
Thanks
Steven.

I have the BMW tool and it is slightly big as well, you really need to get a prybar against it to get a enough pressure to get it started. The pry bar idea works well to press in the new seal as well.

Edit: Actually it was 2 pry bars so that it would be even pressure. I've done 3 like that and has worked well but for sure it would be nicer if the removal tool was a hair smaller to bite into the seal.

Yes, that is all jogging my memory = just as I recall it. Needed a pry bar in there to keep steady, aligned pressure on it while turning it in there. BTW, do not pry against the driveshaft itself, to avoid bending it out of balance. Figure out a way to pry against the body / platform.

Also, I think that as the rubber ages it gets harder and less compliant, which makes it harder for the tool to bite in there. Would be much easier on a new seal.

Hello everyone,
I have an up date - the seal is out.
Today I went to my local Napa store and asked for the seal remover tool made by Evercraft
p/n 776-9250 and I was told this p/n does not exist in Canadian inventory. The sales person assumed it was only available in the US. On the way home I stopped by an automotive shop where a friend of mine works and I asked him if he had one of these tools. He did and he lent it to me. Back at home I compared the diameters of the one I purchased on amazon to the one that was lent to me and I found on the Amazon tool the inside diameter is 0.511” and the outside diameter of the tip where it enters the seal is 0.577”. The tool lent to me measured 0.505” and 0.542” respectively, so his was slightly smaller. Before I tried using his tool, I heated the outside area with a heat gun and applied a little heat to the rubber, to try to soften the rubber. I then inserted the tool and with a small flat pry bar resting on the driveshaft, (very little pressure on the drive shaft) I pushed the tool with the pry bar and turned the tool at the same time. Using this method it took me about 5 minutes to get the seal out. Tomorrow I will clean the drive shaft with a fine emery cloth and some oil, and I will install the seal, transmission pan, etc. Thanks guys for all of your help. Really glad I didn’t have to pull the drive shaft out.
Steven
