What is a stock X5 4.6iS Exhaust Supposed to Sound Like?

Hey all, I have owned 2 E53 4.6iS and my newest one has a stock exhaust from what I can tell but it is extremely quiet it's quite odd. This is what I thought it should sound like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=egKdU4j8wDs and my old 4.6iS sounded similar but was louder for sure since it had an aftermarket billy boat exhaust or something like that from a previous owner so it was much much louder. However, my new 4.6iS has a stock exhaust system but it has no burble or v8 rumble to it like you'd expect. I'm not sure if the previous owner modified the stock exhaust to be quieter for some reason but I don't think they did. I have a few photos I'm going to try and upload to show what the exhaust looks like on the car now. I know these cars do have a sort of spring loaded valve that's supposed to open near the middle of the car under hard acceleration I think but does anybody know how to verify this valve is working and isn't frozen shut for some reason? I know an exhaust leak would obviously change the sound so I had the car brought into an exhaust shop and they put it on a drive on and said they couldn't locate any exhaust leaks to fix.

Can anybody confirm that the video I linked is what a stock 4.6is should sound like? Does anyone have any sound clips or videos of their own 4.6 to compare too?

I do not have an answer for you as my 4.6is has had its resonator deleted. This is what she sounds like on a cold start with some revs: https://youtube.com/shorts/fiKBJTOjEOA?feature=share

You mentioned a spring valve which opens under hard accelerating, which I did not know of. Can anyone tell me some more about this please?

Never heard of and I donít think there is a spring valve. The 4.6 is the same as the 4.4 from prefacelift E53ís apart from the large oval trims (they are still quad pipes inside). The 4.8 has larger diameter pipes and different mufflers at the back. I could be wrong but I donít think I am.
Your video sounds normal.

I swapped a 4.6 exhaust onto my 3.0 (not the center pipes or resonator but just the pipes with the mufflers in them) and it was, as far as I could tell, identical to my 3.0 exhaust except for 10mm larger diameter piping and the oval tips.

The mufflers measured identically to the 3.0 mufflers from the outside at least. I could also detect no change in noise when I did the swap.

That video you linked to is not stock. I just went and started my 4.6 stock and not overly loud at all. That video has had the middle muffler removed I would bet.

All reports that I've heard are that the 4.6 mufflers are identical to the other early X5 mufflers, other than the tips.

The N62 mufflers are noticeably louder. I have 4.8is mufflers on my 3.0i, and it adds a very pleasant grumble without any drone. (To the point where a non-car friend who regularly uses another 3.0i commented about how much more muscular our X5 sounds.)

The cans are the same outside dimensions but the pipes attached to them are definitely larger diameter. Not a huge difference. My butt dyno and my ears could not tell a difference.

I would love to get my hands on the middle pipes and resonator from a 4.6 to see if it bolted up to my mufflers and my headers. Might be another small upgrade. I could use a bit more sound too.

V8 midpipe will absolutely not bolt up to an I6 header. If you want more noise in a pleasant fashion, I highly recommend the 4.8is mufflers. (Or LCI 4.4 mufflers for a bolt on upgrade.) The downside of the 4.8is mufflers is that they have big flanges on them, so you have to fix that. The easiest approach is to use the LCI 4.4 pipes. They slide right into the 4.8 pipes, which makes it a super easy tack job. Hell, you could just clamp them.

Good to know. Maybe I will spend the effort on finding a different resonator instead. I put in an AFE cone filter intake and then the 4.6 exhaust and it makes nice noise, just not a lot of it. I would be happy to hear a little more of the M54.
