Yup Oil question again 3.0d 2004

Hello to all and please don't kick me, ok my 3.0d has hit 110,000 miles, it does drink oil or smoke at all (touch wood) now query i have is how religiously do we need to follow BMWs recomendation of BMWLL01 (superseded by LL04 now)

I been running mobil ESP 5/30w for yonks now, just curious if i chuck in 5/40w instead and a non BMWLL rate doil ie one that just meets the ACEA3 B3 etc rating will I be asking for trouble....?also thinking of putting on a roof rack but thats another story.....any input much appreciated

Most of the posters on here are from North America where we didn't get the M57-equipped E53's, so most are unfamiliar with it. There are numerous oil threads on E70 forums, however, as we DID get those models equipped with the M57. You might want to check those out. I happen to have such a beast, so will throw out my thoughts.

I don't know what, if any, emissions systems you have in Cypress, but I presume you have the SCR catalyst system, but no DPF? Here in the U.S. ours are equipped with DPF's which require a low SAPS oil to minimize filter contamination. LL-04 addresses this need, so it's a good practice here to stick with LL-04 oils. If you don't have a DPF, then low SAPS isn't such an issue, so you're left with needing an oil that meets the other parameters of the specification.

There are 5W-40 oils that carry the LL-04 approval. I happen to use Motul X-Clean 5W-40 in mine because I tow a heavy trailer quite often. I believe that ESP Mobil1 is a very highly regarded oil, though, so I'm not sure why you're wanting to switch away from it?

AM.

Facelift E53 3.0d was produced as EU3 (without DPF) and EU4 (with DPF) variant. No SCR cats on any E53 models.

One of the cheapest oils with suitable ACEA C3 grading is GM Dexos 2 5W-30. Nowadays it doesn't have the BMW LL-04 approval like it used to, but I personally don't care about that. (For example regarding Castrol oils being previous OEM oil supplier no longer have BMW approval even if the oil is exactly the same.)

Quite easy to check when you open the hood.

EU3: no throttle valve, turbo vacuum actuated, no EGR cooler (just plain pipe)
EU4: throttle valve, turbo electric servo actuated, EGR cooler (and thermostat)

Pretty sure we have previously verified that omodos has EU3 with vacuum operated turbo control.
