Headlights,Daytime running lights???

Well I'm back again in search of answers to age old questions like... How do I tell which headlights I have and do I have daytime running lights and don't know it??? I have a 2006 X5 I bought used and I've never noticed the daytime running lights but I have to replace my passenger side low beam and figured I'd ask someone that would know. There's not much room to get the back cover off to replace the bulb so I figured if I have to drop the front bumper since I'm replacing both sides I'd see if I need to get any additional bulbs. I'm starting to get into this repairing things on my own and so far enjoying it. I would appreciate any info/help you all can provide.

First thing is to tell us what you have, i.e. Year, engine, etc. typically we all put this in our signature so it's always there. Next, I'd recommend you get a list of your factory options. Take the your VIN (typically you need he last 7 digits). You can Google for BMW vin decoder. This will tell you all the options your car came with from the factory. Unless, your lights were changed this should tell you what lights you have.

Well for starters if you have DRL's they'll be on all the time.

Ditto above. Model, model year, build date info can go along way in helping us to help you. Some features and options can be determined without asking depending on the model/model year/build date info...so replies to your post can be answered quicker and with better data...cutting through getting wrong or incorrect info.

Here's a BMW VIN decoder site...get the last 7 digits of your VIN (look at the mfg label on your driver's door jamb if you don't know it)...then enter at this site and answer the CAPTCHA question correctly:

VIN decoder sites:

If you've done the above correctly...you should see the options your vehicle came with from the factory. If you have the adaptive bi-xenon headlights (which most face lift V8s have)...you'll see the two options below listed:
  • S522 Xenon Light
  • S524 Adaptive Headlights
And regardless of which type of headlights you have (HID) xenon or halogen...the DRLs have to be "coded" on. There's a symbology chart in the owners manual that explains the little markings in the manual. It's helpful to know what they are so that you can determine if its something optional, something that requires to be coded on, or if its standard equipment etc.

AS you can see in the info below (see yellow highlighted text)...the DRL or daytime driving lights come from the factory NOT ACTIVE...thus requires to be turned on by the dealer (or by aftermarket software/hardware).

I'm not sure what the right answer is, but Posts 2 & 3 have what I think is incorrect information. My X5 is an '05, and the DRLs are set by the coding. One can buy the BMW 1.4.1 scan tool, and go into the programming of the car and set the DRLs to one of two selections. When the DRLs are set on, the high beam lamps are on at low power.

You do not have DRLs or not, you have DRLs that are selected to be on, or not.

You do not have to remove the bumper. Well, that's true on the '05. There are covers over the back of the bulb that you can remove from inside of the engine bay. When the cover is off, the bulbs have a clip that hold them in. The Low Beam is an H7, the High Beam is an H1.

If the OP has the N62 V8, adapative bi-xenon headlights, and headlight washers...it will be easier to remove the front bumper. Those little washer jets prevents the headlight on the left side) from being able to move forward enough to easily change the HID DS2 bulb.

I believe those with the M54 I6 engine can do it much easier...even with the headlight washers...but if you have the V8...its very tight, frustrating, and you have to work blind to get to several of the torx screws to undo the cover from the bulb (urggggg!)

Not until we know more about the OPs vehicle...we all are guessing at some of the things they want to accomplish.

Not sure I'd call that lower outer torx cover screw a "breeze" but at least there's room to work!
