When I have the OFH off to do the gasket on the M54, I always replace the oil separator and the air hoses, including the one that drains to the dipstick tube. Access is much easier. Need to pull a few more things off for access, but it's way easier with the OFH out of the way.

Take your time cleaning the seating surface under the gasket. Mine is pitted I didn't have time to sand off the pitting and will have to redo the OFHG after about 15 months.

(To be fair I did realize I'd have to do it twice)

Take a flashlight and shine it down behind the oil filter housing. You should be able to see some of the webbing on the side of the engine. If there's oil pooled there, it's probably the OFHG. (It's basically that, or the VANOS line - do both if you're in there.) If not, then the leak is elsewhere.

Replace the oil pressure line and washer. Replace the power steering reservoir and return hose. Replacing the CCV is good too. Easier access. Otherwise, taking off the intake takes more time. If you take off the intake, replace the two coolant pipes.

When I do this gasket, I use a tiny bit of 3M Weatherstrip adhesive to hold the gasket in place. Just a dot on a few places so it won't move/pop out of the channel; then put something flat on the face to seat it in the grooves. It grabs instantly and dries fast. It can be awkward to seat the housing on the dowel; the last thing you need is for the gasket to fall out of the grooves.

Also, I've seen at least one guy forget to remove the blue/shop paper towels he stuffed into the block while cleaning the oil mess from the block webs. The result was not pretty.
