Xenon headlight not working with new bulbs

Vehicle: 2006 X5 3.0i

Headlights: Bi-xenon adaptive

Issue: Low beam on driver's side (left) went out, replaced with two different D2S bulbs from two different brands (both known-good). Headlight will still not work. Turn signal works fine. High beams work when I pull stalk, but not when I push. Message on dash: "Check Low Beam Lights"

Some searching on here and YouTube shows others that have had similar probs.

Not sure where to start though. Bad headlight assembly? AHM module? LCM module? How do I start diagnosing this?

There might be some confusion from how the lights are named. Is it the inner light that isn't working??

LCM is a possibility for sure, but can you verify that the left front sode marker is working? I've had the same issue and once I replaced the side marker light the headlight issue still happened but much less frequently...

I don't know if there is a grounding problem that causes one or the other but it's a cheap possibility so don't overlook it.

Yes the inner light. And the turn signal is indeed working.

Also wonder if a ballast issue.

ASFAIK with Xenon headlights the Xenon bulb (outer light) does both high and low beam, the inner light which normally would be low beam is a non xenon running light. Unless yours are different and bi-Xenon means both are Xenon ?? Anyway you might be replacing the wrong bulb??

Whoops you are correct. the OUTER bulb is the low beam. That is indeed the light that is not working no matter which D2S bulb I use. High beam works fine (when pulling back on the light stalk)

What about the side marker light? The one by your engine emblem, is it working fully?

If it works for flash to pass then that pretty much rules out the bulb and ballast and housing wiring. And the other side works? so problem not in the stalk unless it uses 2 seperate circuits. Maybe time to look at a wiring diagram. Maybe EODguy is onto something??

Yep, that’s working fine.

If left and right are separately controlled by the LCM then you might want to start testing there, or work your way back from the light to the ECM. A wiring diagram is going to be your best friend
