What makes that special in cold weather? And how cold is "cold"? Or are you just messing with us?

Mine had a hot weather CCV. I installed a cold weather CCV. Insulation seems to be the only difference. The extra heat will help separate fumes for burning. The CCV hoses fit the oil dipstick properly.

Yep - E53s sold in warmer climates had no insulation on the CCV or the big vacuum lines associated with it. But I think (this is just IIRC) that BMW recommended everybody install the cold-weather version in a TSB or something like that, after sludging issues started occurring. If you go to FCPEuro or one of the other parts sites you can actually see pics of the insulated and non-insulated parts.
Hey X5chemist, was it you that found a cracked intake manifold when you did that job?

After a coolant system and CCV update, yes the intake showed oil seeping. The seam joint point along the DISA valve edge showed oil residue. Black RTV was used to temporarily seal it. On a future maintenance round, I'll replace the intake.

Interesting. That's one thing that came to mind during this ordeal, one more reason I want to take it all apart.

The far right lip seam is where it showed oil fume leaks.

Got it all taken apart and no smoking gun. All the vacuum lines that I can test seem fine. Kind of hard to test some of them but I haven't found any that appear to be damaged. With the CCV itself, before I hacked it apart I could blow both ways across the diaphragm without any restriction at all. Does that sound right?
Little to no sludge at all.

Does this link work for you guys? Two videos of the throttle body when I am pushing on it with my fingers. There is a gap around the plate that I can close completely when I push on it. Doesn't seem particularly loose but I wanted to see what the brain trust thinks.

The intake manifold seems like it is structurally sound. I did break the tiny vacuum line for the secondary air injection, which I will replace. I also found a few bits of oil pooling in top of the valve cover. I can't see any cracks that would indicate a broken valve cover, but that's something that could cause idle issues. Pic attached. Tell me if you think this indicates a problem.
