For what it's worth, having just replaced the starter a couple of months ago, if I had to do it again I'd just remove the intake manifold. It was easier than getting to the starter bolts from underneath the car. Just an anecdote from the annals of my eight-year battle with this car.

On second thought, I have had codes for secondary air for years (I think the valve is bad) and since I don't have smog here, and it doesn't illuminate the check engine light, I'm just gonna cap it off and remove that potential source of leaks.

I pulled the valve cover off and no smoking gun there either. Looks to be structurally sound. The valve cover gasket wasn't even really leaking. No sludge underneath the cover either. So I'm just going to fire the parts cannon again and replace the CCV, the vacuum lines associated with it, the valve cover gasket, the intake manifold gasket, and the IAC valve gasket (which I had never actually replaced during the first parts cannon volley). Worst case is, I take it to the mechanic having narrowed down all those things, I guess....

Yeah, really no need to pull the valve cover. You have the older secondary air valve that still uses vacuum?

I was mostly just worried that it had cracked or something.

Mine is a 2003 (November 2002 build date); did they change the secondary air so it didn't use vacuum later? Mine has a vacuum switching valve and a one-way vacuum valve under the intake manifold, and a long line going around the back of the engine to the actual secondary air valve on the exhaust manifold.

Mine is 2004 facelift so change was probably made with facelift. Yep, the updated ones just work with pressure from the Aux Air pump.

I still have mine out so checked and does pretty much the same, a bit of movement and a bit of spring back, maybe not quite as much as yours.

Most if not all butterflies on throttle bodies do not close all the way. It stays open to a predetermined gap. The IAC further regulates how much air to increase or decrease as needed to maintain preferred idle.

None close all the way because they would get stuck. I would have expected it to be against the stop but likely they want a bit more to vent the intake a bit and/or some extra flare-up on startup. My neighbours Lamborghini sounds like it's about half open on start-up!
