Car sounds like a jackhammer

Since it is summer now I like to drive with my windows down and I've noticed a weird sound coming from my car it's very faint I only hear it when I pass by parked cars because the sound bounces off back to me and it sounds like a faint jackhammer or some type of metal ticking. to be honest I don't know how long this has been going on but I was hoping someone has an idea of what it is or a way to diagnose the problem since I have no damn clue, it sounds like I'm driving with my goddamn drive shaft scraping on the road. I also don't know how to make the sound happen like if it's when I'm braking or gassing it a bit or just letting my car roll.

Have a look at getting some "chassis ears."

I've had similar and it was a bolt from the dust shield center bolt came out but stayed trapped against the knuckle.

My first thought was the sound was coming somewhere from the brakes/rotors so I might check this out, Do you know torque specs for the dust shield bolt?

I've came to the conclusion that the sound is coming from the transfer case actuator so I bought a new gear and will replace it soon since those tend to fail, will update this thread once i replace it.

What year is it? If its '04+, I think at start up it does an adaptation to apply clutches. If it doesn't set, it probably keeps trying. Are dash lights on?

found out the problem which is actually really embarrassing, i've taken my car to an auto shop a long time ago to change my timing chain and i guess they had to work on the car from under which required to take off the drive shaft for the transfer case. basically the transfer case driveshaft bolts literally fell off because the auto shop forgot to tighten/torque them which resulted in a loose drive shaft which caused the ticking sound, glad thats fixed but i still got a 4x4 light because my steering angle sensor has given out.
