Tranny fluid service

I have 202k on my 4.4i 6 speed and no history or idea of it being serviced when I go the car. I have the infamous thud/jump to 2nd when rolling slowly from 1st gear. Do you guys just do the oil and filter change? or would it be necessary to go all the way to replacing those 3 rubber hoses under the valve body?

thanks..

I would do the pan/filter, mechatronic sleeve, tube seals, and use Valvoline Maxlife full synthetic ATF for the fill. Cured my 2nd slow roll thud. And it was pretty severe. Been good for 20k miles now shifting like a new trans.

You could try just the pan/filter and Valvoline first if you want though. The fluid is not expensive (especially compared to ZF LG6) so wasting a drain/fill would not cost much.

PS: I would not use LG6. It's too thin on a high mileage trans unless you are doing all the seals and full service on the valve body.

How difficult or challenging to remove the valve body to access those tube seals?

Thank you.

I did it on my E92 coupe (on my back) and planning the same on my X5. Not difficult, it's more like being meticulous. Make sure you follow instructions to the letter, so prepare well. Take note of Crystalworks' advice. I've seen good DIY on this forum, probably on other forums, not sure.

I swapped out my valve body for one from a low mileage car as I was getting various gearbox issue and like others have said this is not a difficult job you just need to be meticulous , o yeah you'll need a torque wrench that will do if memory serves me right 8nm for the valve body bolts I used this oil from rock oil.
