Never heard of this happening before. I bought over $1000 worth of stuff when I rebuilt an N62 4.4 and they said I can return them for store credit since the engine is damaged and I am now rebuilding a 4.8

Maybe e-mail them or something, you may have just talked to someone who was having a bad day or misunderstood what you wanted. I always e-mail them and they have always been good to me about returns. It is not their policy to require such documentation from a "certified mechanic"...

Hang up and call later. You'll probably get someone else who can help you. Just like calling an airline or the cable co.

Never had a problem with FCP, been buying parts there since about 2008 for my departed Volvo 240.

I've spent thousands at FCP and only had a few returns. But for a legitimate return, never had an issue. I thought it was no questions asked anyway?? I never call anyone but maybe in your case since it was not the correct part in the box, it would be different.

The downside of FCP I have found is this:
You have to buy the replacement part first. And the price is likely higher than when you purchased the original. You only get store credit for the original price.

You have to pay the shipping for the return. Radiators are expensive.. so you have to consider the cost of return shipping.

And then it's only a store credit, no option for a refund.

They used to credit your cc for the new price.

It's not remotely the same deal.

ECS tuning and pelican parts do the same lifetime replacement program. I end up getting a fair bit of stuff from them. Many times it's really just who has what in stock and who can get it here the fastest.

FCP is very hard to get someone on the phone though. I had a damaged steering rack they sent, and because I needed the RMA label to cover the return shipping, it took probably 3 hours to get a person on the phone. Otherwise though I just put stuff with the manual return form, pay the return shipping and get a nice credit.

I wish bimmerworld did the lifetime replacement they're really the best to deal with.

I think so few people really take advantage of the lifetime replacement, everybody ends up selling the car, etc. it's probably a very low percentage of items they sell comes back like that.

Parts being returned for store credit isn't a big deal IMO - it makes sense for the company to do that, because it keeps you shopping with them. Once you have some store credit built up, you buy your next order with them, when you return other parts, those become store credit, it ends up functioning the same you just have some "credit" with the company

I just contacted FCP via live chat (literally open on my other window right now) for an order that was missing a part, and I was hoping to get some extra parts I missed on the order sent expedited with the missing part. They can't combine a "regular" order with a missing order shipment, but they expedited the part that was missing and then refunded me the cost for expedited shipping on the other parts.

I have always had a really positive experience with FCP...

Same as most here, had good experience with FCP. That is crazy they want you to get a mechanic to sign off on the part condition... CRAZY. Open a chat window and talk to someone via that. What I always do.

I also shop ECS and AZAutohaus. Used to be exclusively FCP, but changed that practice when they went to store credit instead of refund payment. I know that's not a big deal, but I hate when policies get changed on me after the purchase that I based on old policy. Bothers me every time a company does it.

FCP lost a $500 front brakes order that went to ecs directly related to the change in policy.

I ordered new rear brake pads from fcp because i bought the last ones there and should be able to return for credit.

I also bought a couple oil change kits but now i have to buy them again to be able to return the first kit.
