If it's leaking there should clearly be black sooty deposits.

Hi, i had a look at the firewall and noticed that the foam had shrunk like you mentioned.

I then got extra foam and applied it around the existing foam to creat a better barrier.

Since doing this there has been massive improvement and i am no longer getting the fumes getting in to the cabin.

I still need to find that leak in the upper exhaust system now.

Thank you for your help.

Where is the foam located? I assume it was long cross width rubber seal failing. It's finally cold enough here for seat warmers. A can smell a light scent of oil. I need to do the valve cover gasket soon. I know it keeps dripping slow. I use brake cleaner to remove sludge on the header covers.

Okay, i will try to explain where the foam is.

I have a 3.0 diesel engine. What i had to do was remove the firewall on the back of the engine compartment.

To do this there are two bolts, one on each side. One of them being behind the windscreen washer container and the other is almost behind the webasto heter unit.

Then you remove the upper trim and pull out the firewall.

When i pulled out the firewall i noticed two ports that are for the air going into the cabin had foam around the edges. This foam did not look perished but it had shrunken down.

If you go to your local hardware shop you can get thick or high foam with a sticky side.
I cut the foam to the required size and applied that to the top of my existing foam.

Then i reassembled the firewall. Bolts were tightened etc and then that was it.

I noticed that the eye watering exhaust fumes were not coming in to the cabin and one issue was solved.

I still need too work out where the fumes from the exhaust system are leaking from.

Sorry i could not attach pictures to help you better but if you need pics i can take them for you.

Thanks
