Question 2002 X5 3.0 - Doors won't lock with key, or center button

The battery has been dead on the fob for more than a year. We have always used the key in the lock/unlock on the driver door.

The Key feels like theres no resistance turning left or right (not stuck). No sound when turning the key either way.

The center button does nothing, no sound or activation of the locks. No liquid has been reported spilled on the center button.

We hooked up an ODBII computer and tried to actuate the locks - Failed.

Fuzes all are good in the back passenger side. The liftgate latch opens easily. The 12V battery is less than a year old.

I also have a fault on Basic module 5: Internal fault, voltage 00. Also lighting module (LM) codes.

I wouldn't think the lighting codes would have anything to do with the door locks not working. I could be wrong though, BMW has proven me wrong a few times

When the driver door switch module fails (usually from rain water), these sorts of errors happen. It's easy to pull out and get a look at the circuit board.

What m scanner are you using?

Absolutely, make sure you are working with a fully charged battery and not just a new battery, top it off

EDIT: Never mind its gotta be in the door panel, since you said water intrusion.

Just using Google search might work better.

May not be your current problem, but the E53 door lock mechanism is not sturdy enough to handle indefinite locking /unlocking manually with a key….

Get the battery in your key fob fixed or get a new fob.

When my key fob didn't work i had to rebuild my lock cylinder at least once a year so definitely get that resolved.

Scanner looks nice.

The master window control just pulls out with a trim tool or similar (I've used a stack of credit cards with the top one sticking out in a pinch)

Thanks guys I'll get a new fob and a new part for the window control... So crazy that we can't just replace the battery like other cars...

I really appreciate all of the help

Including the new ones. The e70 doesn't use rechargeable fob!

Did you try to sync your current fob? Did it used to work now doesn't?
