Launching "Operation Fix the Transmission"

I've set out to fix my X5 transmission 6HP-26X.

Symptoms but no error codes:

1) Low fluid (trans perfectly level with leveler placed on its center) and not a drop of oil when engine running and trans oil temp at 38C (via ISTA). I was shocked to find the oil fill plug could be opened by hand!

2) Occasional "kick from behind". Confirmed the EGS module has the latest firmware version.

3) Poor/jerky shifting when car is cold.

4) Occasional reverse slipping.

5) Oil leak from the Selector Shaft Seal.

6) Oil leak from the trans pan gasket (always looked wet).

Mission:

1) Start with drain and refill with fresh trans fluid without dropping the pan.

2) Drive for a few miles. Stop and go through all the gears including neutral.

3) Drain the fluid and drop the pan.

4) Replace trans drain and fill plugs, gaskets, magnets, filter and mechatronic mounting sleeve seal kit.

5) Replace all solenoids and the white long gasket.

6) Replace mechatronic separator plate (B52).

7) Replace trans damper pistons.

8) Replace gear selector shaft seal.

9) Fill her up with fresh fluid.

Good luck!

I put a transmission up the other day with the locating studs trick on the engine block and it was so easy. A million times easier than my first attempt without knowing that trick. Somehow the local Lowe's had a bunch of 12x1.75 mm bolts in stock, cut the heads off and slotted them for a screwdriver. I had the bolts started in like 5 minutes, no struggle. The first time it was like four rounds with Mike Tyson.

Nice! Could you please explain that a little more (the cut off bolts)? In the future I'll have to remove the trans to fix the coolant leak from behind the engine, a common issue on the N62.

I drained hardly 4 quarts. I'm thinking I should do two drain/refills to dilute the remaining dirty oil, before dropping the pan.

Sounds about right. My two recent drain and fills were about 4.5l (a bit over 4.5qts) but in both drain I left it overnight (drain while hot - leave overnight to get cold before fill and then warm to correct temp to set level).

Two drain fill cycles will replace about 75% of the fluid.

Sadly, I now have a trans problem... it has developed a 5th slam at low loads (around 1500rpm or so) - this seems to be a direct result of the drain and fill.

Thinking about options - most likley is a mechatronic "rebuild" such as you are doing.

Yep, that's right - now looking into 3 fill cycles after consulting ChatGPT. As for your issue, checkout these videos by Gary Ferraro, whose considered a guru of the ZF transmissions. You can actually ping him with your issue and he may offer recommendations. Any trans code thrown?

X5only,
Nice! Thanks for the level idea. I'll be checking mine due an oil cooler replacement. So far, the coolant leak has been sealed.

Good luck

Just in case you haven't seen this earlier thread and run into the same issue as Wpoll and I both did with the bridge seal:
