Let's fix this thing! Headliner repair

Moving to new projects on the 2003. My headliner is literally falling off. The entire fabric piece from behind the ceiling light is literally off, hanging, giant bubble..I've tried to reglue it using 3m spray glue several times. It's gross and looks like shit. The 3m has held

So I'm thinking about new techniques. The challenge is the foam under the fabric is degraded, nothing will stick and it's hard to scrape it clean.

I'm considering taking a tube of construction adhesive, putting it onto a masons hawk and using a spackle knife to spread it and reglue the fabric. I'll try and go a few inches at a time.

Any other ideas or thoughts on this one. I can't seem to push anything into the ceiling of the car like a tack or staple. It's really the worst looking part of the vehicle right now.

Just spitballin' here, I'd remove it and take it to an upholstery shop. Or buy some bulk mouse fur material, rip off the old fabric, and use one of those flappy sanding wheels to get rid of the old foam, and use the 3M maximum-strength spray adhesive (I think it's the stuff in the black can).

Mine is still reasonably well-attached, a few loose areas but not bad.

I don't really know how to remove the entire ceiling panel. If anyone has an idea about that I'm willing to try it. Might make the overall job easier. I saw some videos of someone screwing washer into the ceiling, but I'm not sure how much room I have to go and don't want to puncture the roof.

My '04 Chevy 2500HD sits in direct sun all day, every day, never garaged; the headliner just above the windshield let go years ago, so I used grey duct tape to hold it up (at first).

Then, I tried Gorilla Tape, and finally 'real' duct tape, over five years, and none did the trick (appearance didn't matter, nobody else gets in my truck).

Last July '25, I decided to take off the tape, and try brush-on headliner adhesive, but the fabric was so torn and degraded after years of being tapped, the glue was ineffective.

So, I bought a 'car roof repair kit' from Amazon for $10, and a can of 3M Super 77 spray adhesive, for another $10.

Since the front edge was frayed and thin, I trimmed it back about 2 or 3 inches from the windshield, sprayed the headliner fabric/backer interface, then folded the newly cut fabric back to make a thicker straight edge just behind the sunshade pivots, then used the kit to secure it in place.

I used 10 of the 60 screws & buttons (grey, to match the headliner), and it has held in place for a year, so far. I barely tightened the little screws into the backer, judged just enough to not strip out the backer (I tested it out on two spots now covered by the headliner).

I never let a headliner get so bad before, and previously had success with both brush-on and spray adhesives (except one time I stripped out the fabric and spray-painted the backer to match the leather interior, on my wife's '85 Chrysler LeBaron Turbo Coupe... It looked pretty good!).

If your headliner isn't that far gone, try the kit, and or adhesives, but if you want it to look like new, go to a pro.

Thanks. So I tried all the spray adhesive and nothing really held over a short time gone by. Today I executed on my hair brain idea. Bought 3 tubes of Loctite 375 construction adhesive, it's like a caulk paste. I bought a throw away 4" spackle knife. Emptied the tube I to a shoe box cover and spread out the adhesive going a little at a time and then regluing the liner. It's up and holding quite well for now. Very humid and will take a bit of time to really dry. The white adhesive is nice, but it is showing through the light grey fabric. Maybe clear would have been better. Frankly, I don't care much what it looks like. The car is pretty trashed inside. It's all good!

I did get a new steering wheel and ditched the torn one. Also got new set of tires today!

I think the only way to fix it is to remove it...I might actually have a spare headliner in the rafters above my garage....And I sold my E53 a few months ago...If I do have it I'd give it to you if you came and got it. I am in MA

Removing the headliner is not difficult...I pulled the one I had out of a junkyard car with a pano sunroof. IIIRC, It's only held by 10-20 screws...and was pretty straightforward. It eventually dropped and it slid out the back hatch.

Junkyards rarely sell headliners, so they will give you a good price. Maybe you pull one yourself, get it refinished and install in your E53 all at whatever pace you like.

If I was closer, I would go grab a full board liner. I need to pull mine off. The sliding roof part has the worst hang. It's at the bottom of my to do list. Eventually, I will get to it.

Seems like it's well attached now. The paste glue has better grip over the crumbling old foam vs just the spray adhesive that's a very light coating.

I didn't see anything about removal in my Bentley Manual and it's not obvious. The panel, not just the fabric is coming down a bit just back of the small sunroof but it's not an issue for me or my occasional passenger as of right now.

I'll add headliner panel removal to my list of things to do before the car is scraped! I've also never removed the intake manifold. I want to but also never needed to yet. Maybe my odd coolant leak in the back of the car (other thread) means the coolant pipes under the intake are leaking, but for now the drip has stopped so it's a real mystery.
