Honestly how is the M62 v8 vs the trusty M54

Hi, I'm obsessed with the e53. I want to buy another. I'm really looking just at the 3.0i but see a nice clean v8. How much harder is it to work on. I'm not worried about the body, that I know, like the doors and the lights and interior, that's the same and I can do all that nigly little shit, but what about the engine peripheral stuff. Is it much harder? Coolant tank, belts, cam sensors, etc. I guess it has twice as many in some cases. I also recall reading something once about the valves and black smoke. Any detailed info would be nice.

Should I just stick with the 3.0. we know these are rock solid engines and transmissions.

Thanks!

I did a refurbish on 3 m62tu including pulling heads and replaced bent valves due to a broken timing chain.

The biggest issues with that motor are 1) single timing chain will stretch enough over time to offset timing between banks and if you don't replace the tensioner often enough with OE qualify the weight of the chain will slap into the guides and smash them to bits. And 2) the vanos adjusting units (cam phasers) are built with inferior seals and are very expensive but can be refurbished.

Low enough miles and fiber scope the chain guides though the oil fill hole it cold be a solid choice.

It took me about 30 hours each time to rebuild the m62s about $12-1500 in parts.

I've read about 300 kmi m62 with original guides. It's all about keeping new tensioners. 120 kmi first replace then maybe every 60 kmi after that. Vanos rebuild ≈ 110-150 kmi.
