Weather keeps playing with my emotions, gets nice for a day or two then rains or snows. Supposed to snow tomorrow after two 50plus degree days I'm glad you kept your X

X5 cross country trip March 2011
I just completed a cross country trip with my X5 towing 5,000 pounds in a 17 foot trailer. The X5 had 92,000 miles on the clock and no issues since purchased.
It was quite a trip, six days and approximately 3,000 miles long, started out in Virginia and ended up in Seattle Washington. We had to drive through all kinds of weather including but not limited to rain, hail, fog and snow at different parts of the country, with no issues, however, with the constant fear of jackknifing. On board I had all kinds of code readers, BMW diagnostic software on my laptop, emergency internet access, power converters, spare engine parts like cooling system hoses, fuel filter, work shop manuals, etc. and luckily I didn't have to use any of it as we had no issues. The X5 is a 2002 model with the 4.4 engine, what a work horse it was, going through high elevation mountain areas, effortlessly. The transmission had a tendency of downshifting all the time to maintain my set cruise speed of 70 MPH, so I experimented with with the sport and manual shifting modes. I discovered that manual shifting was best for minimal automatic downshifts. The engine ran cool the entire trip with very low oil consumption. When we arrived at our final destination we parked and several hours later the left rear tire went flat, it picked up a nail on the way. The flat was repaired and the MX5 Michelin tires now have over 50,000 miles on them with no issues prior to this. What a great trip it was! My X5 turned out to be the ultimate driving machine, I'd do this trip again without any fear, this SAV is built BMW tuff. Sorry about the low res cell phone pic below, this picture was taken at a rest stop in MN just before the hail storm.
