2006 BMW X5 Battery Problems

Hi, I just bought a 06 X5 about 4 months ago and it has had battery problems.

A month ago this started when my X5 died in a grocery store parking lot. I went in for a minute and I came back out it was dead. Couldn't jumpstart it or anything. I had it towed, my stealer jumped it from the battery and it worked. I went on a 2 day vacation and I came back and it was dead again, I jumped it from the battery and it took a while to get started and I drove it to my dealer and they said it was fine. I made them install a new battery to be safe. I have never left the lights on, just in Auto and all of my electronics are off inside the car, I leave the phone in there but it doesn't charge while the car is off.

I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem?

Thanks

Hmmm, sounds to me like just a bad battery with some dead cells, or possibly even an alternator. Have not heard about this happening with a 2006 before.

Could very well just be the battery. If it happens again you'll not it's not .

Sorry to dredge this up from the past. I left my X5 4.8is parked in front of our house for 3 days while I was away. When I came home again the battery was completely dead. I would start with a boost, but the message screen says "engine failsafe mode"

I have taken it to the dealer today, and they just called to say essentially that they couldn't find anything wrong except the battery needed a charge (duhh!). I have told them I will be truly annoyed if it has to be boosted again, but they claim there is nothing wrong with the battery or the charging system.

This whole process started a couple of weeks ago when the bluetooth wouldn't work, followed a week later by the remote not working (key needed), and then this. If I hadn't made the appointment two weeka ago I would be stewing around without a vehicle!

Has anyone run into this? And was there a final resolution?

Thanks,

John

The BMW OEM batteries are of dubious quality. Some will fail early. If you can get them replaced with a maintanence free agreement, you should, especially if your battery has failed to hold a charge on numerous occasions. If you're beyond 50K, then look to the aftermarket for a replacement battery. See the battery article in the X5world front page for further information.

No electrics xpert here, but it should really only be a result of
a few things:
-bad batt. to start with, (an '06 batt. should not
be dying yet).
-bad alternator resulting in no charge to batt.
-a drain somewhere in the system...

A few days or even a couple weeks should not leave you with
a dead batt on a less than 2 yr old battery, imo.

Stlr could/should run some tests that show how the real
condition of your battery: remove surface charge, state of
charge test and a load test...my guess is the "techs" did
none of this; they simply slapped on a high amp charger
and said you were fine.

Batts, that have failed or are failing, are very hard to diagnose
as to "why", imo. I'd lean on them for a new one or, a highly
discounted replacement if they are gonna stick you with a
R&R charge...then, if your X croaks again with a new batt.,
you have at least eliminated one facet of the wonderment.

Thanks for the comments.

The dealer claims that they have "deep charged" the battery and that I should not have any more problems.

I am at a loss to understand how that can be when with no cause other than be being left without starting for 3 -4 days the battery has gone completely flat. If it happens again I will require a new battery, and a more complete investigation.

I am a bit concerned that they think that leaving the vehicle for more than 5 days I should expect that charge to have run down. They suggest that it should be trickle charged if left for more than five days. Is it just me or is this not ridiculous? A modern vehicle should at least be capable of getting from weekend to weekend without being used (or left at the airport for a week on business travel).

i desided to appier with comment. A few thoughts in writing...( yesterday I did charged my battery ..it lost some power )
first one ..- security system is charging mostly of the time when car is parked..How long time needed for this system to drein battery charge ( how to estimate time..?)
second: when for example we turning key in ignition all electric parts start likelly brithing ( even we did not turn engine on yet!) it does eat some energy?..!
3..Then we actually turning ignition ant it charging battery to start process...
This is standart circle ,when we getting in the car ( turning alarm on and off with remoute ..ets) As my understanding compensation with working engine should ballance and feed battery back to "normall" level ..But it is still loosing and need to be extra feeded..?
Should be ( even in ideal condition) battery extra feeded ?

What is the best( voltmetr like, indicator ?) equipment to messure battery level ?( where to buy if so ?)
regards John

To be honest, I do have that problem with my motorcycle. I have to trickle charge it each week to keep the battery alive because all the electronics is causing a drain all the time. But in a motorcycle the manufacturer specifies the smallest possible battery that can survive because of space and weight limitations. In a vehicle the size of the X5 BMW could specify an array of batteries and not notice the weight.

dzhoka you are right of course, there is a big drain, but for the money BMW could have worked it all out.

John, if they have deep charged the battery and the charging system checks out OK, then some faulty module is draining the battery. Follow attached thread to find a few diagnostic procedures from Morristown BMW. I tried as instructed and found there was nothing wrong with my car, sleep mode was working fine. You'll need a fluke multimeter and a couple of hours of time - if you find that your X will not enter "sleep" mode, then you need to start pulling fuses to zero in on what circuit is causing the problems. Also, just for ha-ha's, disconnect your cell phone charger when not in use even though it switches off with the key - it's worth a shot! Anyway, good luck and hope this helps pinpoint your problem!
