Yes, common problem. Many posts here on it. You need to replace the tailgate handle/switch (I think it's one unit).

I had a similar problem. Mine was caused by water in the switch mechanism. I took mine apart and blew it dry with an air compressor. It has been fine since (6+ months).

I've had the same or a similar problem (key won't open the hatch/switch won't etc.) since new (a 2001) and had the hatch assembly replaced many times (and BMW has paid for it every time).
It always recurs- sometimes in different forms. Recently turning off the fog lights (I'm not kidding) will cause the hatch to open. I've named the car Christine. If anyone has any other theories I'd welcome them- my dealer doesn't know what to do either. BTW the cost for the entire assembly is about $500. |

J. What year is your X, is it not still under warranty? If not then try Wpcmac's solution, must be worth a try before forking out all that dosh (money).
