Smile Aux Input & external cell phone antenna

a) I have a 2000 X5 with Navigation. Has anyone ever installed the aux. input adapter in this year vehicle? If so, how to do it? The dealerships informed me that the adapters will only work on 2002 or newer.

b) I have a cpt8000 internal cell phone in my X5 but the reception is poor. The unit was connected to the internal antenna that is mounted under the rear spoiler. I have heard that using a second antenna mounted under the rear bumper would help but I am looking for another solution before going to that extreme. Can anyone tell me if using the external window antenna will increase the reception range.

Thanks.. Frank

a) In order to get the factory AUX input you will need to replace your radio module (located in the spare tire compartment to the rear of the battery) with one from a 2003 or newer. The 2000 and 2001 radio modules use a round pin plug, whereas the 2002 and newer use a newer style flat pin plug, so you will need an adaptor harness to make this work. BMW has these conversion harnesses available.

b) I would suggest looking into adding the compensator module, which is available from BMW. It boosts the signal strength of the internal antenna.

Thanks UCrewX5 for your recomendations. One last question for you. After installing the latest radio modulator can I just install the Aux Input in the front as the instructions indicate or will I still need additional cables?

Thanks again.. Frank

mine is installed in the rear. You can run it to the front if you need to, though.
