Hi Legion,

I'd like to see your photos but currently unavailable, could you show them to me?
I'm taking out the rails in the roof
Thanks

I might take this task on this weekend after I install my angel eyes. If I do, I'll take some pics so you can see what each step looks like.

The pics no longer exist of the closeup. Is there now an article on this? I am considering doing this mod today. Someone please post images of the closeup?

To be honest you dont need the pics, the mod is really straight forward.

Though you must have the right tools and the plugs to fill the holes once you have removed the rails.

I bought some black plastic plugs then primed and colour coded them with some touch up spray from BMW before I did the mod.

Recently there were some threads on removal of the roof rails. The problem generally was finding the plugs that would fit and be flush and unobtrusive.
Anyway I found some available on the web that fit perfectly, I have bought and tried quite a few (there only a few pence each) in my search and trust me these are the best fit and flushest looking. I just thought I would share this info.

I colour coded mine with touch up spray from the dealer. The finish is rough but can be fine sanded, you should do this anyway before you paint. Otherwise paint may not take well. Or you can leave them as they come.

I do not suggest these as a permanant option but it allows you to decide if you want to make the mod more permanent by way of filling and spraying or if you just fancy a temporary change for a while, whatever.

Anyway the supplier is Conrad Electronics GMbH - www.conrad-direct.co.uk

The part numbers and designation are:

Hole Stops 76159 - Part No: 523894 ( these are for the small holes on the centre fixing, there is one on each side.) 2x16mm.

Hole Stops 76175 - Part No: 523907 ( these are for the larger holes on the end fixings, there are four each side.) 8x18mm.

One other point to share, if you get these plugs or any other I found the best way to take them out of the hole is to use a plastic banding strip. The kind you get round packaging. The same way its recommended to remove the roundels.

To remove the rails you need a T30 torx key. You remove the rubber covers at the back of the fixing points, I used a slim screw driver. But I placed a cloth on the roof itself to protect the paint work in cased I slipped a tool.

I then used the Torx key on a ratchet spanner to undo the rails once off you are left with three mounting blocks on each side sitting on rubber gromets. These undo with as I remember a 10mm spanner. Once off I T-cut the paintwork as there was some build up around where the grommets sat.

I then popped in the plugs and there it was.

Hope that helps
Pete

I bought that 3m clear vinyl sheet which is used for the front of vehicles to prevent paint chipping. It looks very sleek and is more waterproof than those plugs that others recommend.

Have to say the plugs I used were water proof, living in the UK with the wet weather we have, I had no issues at all.

Heres a pic of mine without rails,
