snow tires and wheels

Im looking into buying some winter wheels and tires for my 02 4.6. I may also keep these new wheels on the car year round. I know that there are a few large (20inch) snow tires available. Im not really concerned about price, Ideally I would like to have 20inch or higher black wheels with a chrome lip. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for wheels and tires (and sizes) that i should look into.

My friend has a 06' 4.8is and he runs 275/40/20 with Pirelli Ice and Snows. We live in Denver and he drives to Vail every weekend and hasn't had any problems.

My owners manual recommends 255/55x18 snow tires on all four wheels. Same size rims for all four corners.

Ton1333,
I live in Boston and would not recommend driving 20's in Boston or Cambridge for the winter.
The craters that open up here from November on will be difficult to navigate with 20's and could make it an expensive winter for you. I would recommend buying a dedicated 17 (cheapest) or 18" dedicated snow set for the winter. You can probably get a used full set of wheels/tires on this forum for the same $ as 4 x 20" snow tires.
For what its worth, I have 19's for summer and I have 17's with snows for the winter - 17's are not the best looking but give the most peace of mind, 20's will look better but its a trade off, IMHO

4.6is snows

Because of bigger brakes on the 4.6, you will need at least 18" rims.

Ton1333,

Yes, that is the same for the fronts. He had 18inch 69s for his previous 4.6is but for some reason they wouldn't fit over the calipers on his 4.8is so he sold them to me and bought two more 274/40/20s for the rear wheels for winter. He runs the Pirelli's Ice and Snows on them, no problem.

17's

I live in Boston, have 19's for the summer and 17's for the winter. Wouldn't use anything else. I actually have an extra set of 17's if you want, I'll give you a great deal on them (no shipping since you are local).
