I have a good friend who works for GM in Detroit, Michigan. He confirmed that GM makes the transmission for several BMW vehicles. However GM is not able to advertise this in their agreement with BMW.
When the X5 first came out, GM bought the first 4 off the line and completely dis-assembled them right down to every nut and bolt. Every single part was removed and labelled in their 'test lab.'
I couldn't believe it when he first told me, but he was involved in the project and works specifically in the air-conditioning/heating/ventilation systems on the new GM designs, so I belive his word.
It doesn't really surprise me. The only reason domestic vehicles are selling now is because they are starting to look more and more like their Japanese and German competition and offer the same features although I can't say much about their build quality.
