1500 miles in the X5.... the bad

You knew there had to be a bad didn't you?

Driving in heavy rain, and the first time the car had been in rain since I'd bought it, my feet were getting wet. I was 100 miles into my drive and I noticed that I was getting dripped on. Water was dripping out from above my left ankle. When I felt the carpet, it was soaked. Got on the phone to the dealer I bought it from (CPO, and at 38,000 miles still under the original 4/50) and basically asked them WTF? Their first response was "Oh, just bring it in on Monday and we'll look at it." Keep in mind this was Friday morning and I'm 100 miles into a 750 mile drive.

I explained that when I opened the sunroof, the water on the driver's side wasn't draining and was overflowing into the car. When they finally grasped the situation they put the shop foreman on the phone with me who turned out to be a huge help. Fortunately I had some tools with me, so he walked me through pulling the A-Pillar drip down. Turns out the front left drain hose was kinked shut. Now keep in mind this is a July 2004 build X5 so this hose has been kinked for 3 1/2 years!!! It wouldn't stay opened, so I used pieces of dowel (from a project my 5 yr old had done and which I was taking to one of my sisters as a present from her) , and a couple of zip strips to Macguyver a splint to hold it open. Success, the roof started to drain, and worked for the rest of the trip.

So 2 questions-
1) has this happened to anyone else?
2) Am I nuts to demand that the carpeting, insulation and the airbag in the pillar all be replaced? When I pulled the cover off, everything in that pillar- wiring, airbag etc- were soaking wet and dripping. And the carpet didn't dry until Sunday. Frankly, there's now way this car hasn't leaked before. The kink didn't magically appear in the 9 days I owned the car. It had to have been leaking kinked shut for years. Is this an unreasonable request?

But this issue aside, the X5 performed flawlessly. Glad I made the purchase.

I would try to get it replaced, can't hurt to try. Better to do that than to have to do it out of warranty. Maybe even take it to an indie, have them check it out and list what should be replaced, and find out what else could have been damaged for the 3.5 yrs it's been on the road.

I'm not sure how much luck you would have with all that (my experience with BMW service only goes back two months)...

Personally, I would wait till it is dry and then see if there is any smell/rot in the carpet.

I would have the carpet removed and the vehicle checked for water/rust damage, and then finally I would have the water leak path checked for any signs of corrosion, and then if anything is found, I would get them to replace corroded parts.

The wires themselves, as long as the sheilding is still intact would not bother me.

I'm most concerned about the air bag in the pillar. And my 5 1/2 yr old daughter has very pronounced allergies that I don't want to aggrevate with either chemicals used for cleaning or by any mold that may have been accumulating over the past 3+ years.

Agree about most shielded wires.
