2006 X5 3.0 Deal Review
I'm excited about the SAV and have been a frequent visitor to this site since making the deposit. However, I'm getting cold feet, namely for two reasons. First it seems these vehicles depreciate like there's no tomorrow. I've been following used pricing on eBay. Clean X5's with ~60K miles seem to be trading in the mid teens, (which causes me to think my deal is too rich.) It also seems X5's are maintenance hogs with all sorts of little annoying service and repair issues. I'm OK with occasional service but I don't want to buy the car "wrong" and then have to sink a bunch more money on top of that. I will have a remaining factory warranty through April 1. This gives me a free 1 month shake down cruise. Two questions for the community: 1. Does my deal sound reasonable? 2. What top maintenance issues should I watch for or get checked out before April 1. I need some encouragement here. Many thanks. |

Good find on the 6 spd manual trans! That alleviates any auto trans issues..
1-Dunno if price is "great"; some of the used pricing mavens here may chime in. The dlr would not CPO this car? A few grand more, "for them", but it offers some safety net. Surprised it's not CPO. 2-Ask to see the service records; coolant and brake fluid should have been change by now. Original brakes? If so, you are on borrowed time there. But, seeing the full service record should help in your decision and offers the car's "provenance". Depreciation? Cars are depreciating "assets"; whether BMW/X5 is better or worse that "other cars" is hard to ascertain. Other things to watch for, the usual suspects: window regulators, water pump, coolant reservoir, a "clean" oil cap, (which may indicate no CCV problem), good tight feel to steering and front end, smooth well balanced ride and wiggle free hard braking, etc. What size wheels and tires? You may be looking at snow tires for next winter in Pittsburgh. Hope you got to really "drive it" on a test drive. Envious of the 6 speed... My 50Cts. GL, mD

Many thanks mD.
The Dealer will CPO this X5, I just chose not to since it would cost $2-3K more. Apparently the Dealer prepped the car as if it were going to be CPO'd and the car "passed" their inspection. (For instance, they put 4 brand new tires on the car.) I'm not sure I understand what you mean by a "clean oil cap". Could you explain? |

Not trying to spend your dough, but if that car is CPO'd it might be worth renegotiating for an acceptable price,
for both you & the dlr...that CPO coverage, while not as extensive as the oe warranty, at least offers some safety net for you, for the next 2 years. The CCV/oil separator issue is somewhat common for colder clime Xs, and the cap may offer a "view" to that situ, or may not...just an idea. Fwiw, a cursory glance at the BMWNA site, searching for CPO'd 2006 X5s, with manual trans, turned up only 2: both have much higher mileage and a higher price than your selection. Used BMWs are, imo, a leap of faith, but they are an extraordinary suv. Our '01 3.0, with the old 5 spd manual trans, keeps rolling down the road, fairly trouble free, knock on wood. GL, mD |

What should I expect to pay for the CPO. Its 2-years or 100K miles, (which means nothing to me since I drive around 6K miles per year and this car only has 36K miles on it today.)
Is the warranty negotiable? |

Regarding the warranty, I would not even entertain the thought of buying one of these w/o the CPO no matter what price I was able to get the car for. Otherwise you are really asking for trouble. Also, if several trips to the dealership for repairs and being without your car for days at a time is OK with you than you will be OK with your purchase. Otherwise your cold feet is justified. You are correct to assume you will have several annoying service and repair issues because you will. If this is more of a concern of yours than how the vehicle looks or handles, you should not make the purchase. I wish that I did not make mine.

Re: depreciation 60k-36k = 24k miles or 2 to 2.5 yrs normal mileage for a daily driver. 26k in and 15k out (guessing) is 11k in depreciation. This ends up being between 370 to 460 a month in depreciation over the period. This is before repairs / maintenance. I would get it if you're gonna keep it a long while. Manuals are rare and hard to sell later (unless you find an enthusiast) so make sure you get a great price on the buy. This car is also the 'old' bodystyle which should help you get a good price. You should have a lot of negotiating power. |

I paid $25k for my 06' 3.0/auto, sport pkg., every option. about 1 year ago w/ 44k miles. It was and still is in immaculente condition. 1 previous owner (mainly CA, then moved to AZ) who upgraded to factory 20" wheels w/ new tires. Seller was asking $29k obo, was able to talk him down to $25k, money talks.
