I just did the same thing with a set of 20" style 87s. I'm having them mounted this week. I had them powdercoated at a place next to the 500 track (I live in Indianapolis) that specializes in race cars/motorcycles. It ended up costing me about 100/wheel for the powdercoating, but they look awesome. I can't wait to see them on the rig in a few days. I got the idea from a silver E70 that was in my local dealers showroom. It had big 20" black wheels. Janix also did a similar thing and has some pics at his website.

Just dropped off my 168's this morning to get refinished. Apparently the previous owner learned(or didnt) how to park with my X... Will be installing my new Yokohama Advans too - im stoked!

I chose a place that paints & clears them though. Powdercoat is usually thicker and not as smooth/glossy of a finish since the clear is mixed in the powder instead of being applied as it's own separate coat. They are spraying a few extra coats for that extra fresh dopeness.

mine appears to be a semi gloss. They strip the original silver/gray, then run the wheel through a powdercoat. They then let it sit for a week, then do it again. It was a 3 week process from when I dropped them off until pickup. The finish (now black) is smoother now that it was originally in the silver. It looks beautiful, and its the same process they are using on the Indy race cars, brickyard cars, etc. Very shiny, very smooth.

They can apply a separate clear coat.
