That seems like high fuel consumption. Don't know where you are. USA? Hot climate? High altitude? Are you using 91 AKI?

Assuming US gallons, I would think you should be closer to 15 for city driving. If the tire pressures are correct, and you do not drive very aggressively all the time, then you may want to check with the dealer and see if anything shows up on the fault codes. Other than that, it could be a dragging brake, but that is not likely over that mileage without other symptoms.

when i first bought my 2000 4.4 i was getting 280 miles on a full tank (£80) this was with 95 ron petrol. i then checked the tyre pressure and used 97 ron petrol. now the computer is saying 375 miles before the next fill.

In the manual it does say to use 98 ron petrol for better performance and economy, I would have to say that on better petrol the car drives a ot better and the mpg has increased.

Maybe there's something wrong with the trans if it came up twice? Why'd they just reset it?

when It happen the the first time i was descending HILL was very scary the car stucked on the 5th gear i stopped turned off the engine start again and again the only gear available was the 5th gear i tried Manual and sport same thing no luck. i drove 30 mile to go home the next day i was heading to the dealer the fault is gone from the OBC and the gear back to normal.

i went to the dealer they said they reset the code ( i thought they fixed it) but it look like the reset the OBC or somthing like that

The second time it happen but all gears the were available just Message on the OBC (TRANS. FAIL PROGRAM) I turned off stopped start again and its gone I DIDNT GO TO THE DEALER THE CAR WORKING fine and thats one month ago.

When I bought my X a year ago it got about 19mpg with me watching my foot on the throttle. Now, 30,000 miles later it is 18.6mpg roughly. So I would say a range of 17-20mpg is about right for the X5 4.4.
