4.4 Stalled At 35mph

Hi...

New here, wondering if anyone has heard of this issue: I was in a store, left and got in my '05 4.4. I started up, drove a block, made a left turn, and got up to about 35 mph.

I then noticed that the accelerator was not doing anything - the thing had completely stalled, dead. I stopped, put it in park, and it started up again fine. I have a 9-month pregnant wife who drives this daily, needless to say I'm not having her set foot in it until I know what it's about.

We also had the NAV system start calling BMW Assist every 5 minutes last week, all by itself. We've seen the Air Suspension error message (once), and had the tranny SLAM issue a couple of times (where it feels like you're being rear-ended).

None of these bother me too much, but the stall has me scared. I can only imagine my wife & newborn on the freeway at 75 and it stalls. Or making a left turn with traffic coming when it stalls. Eeek.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated...

The stalling is a known issue, though I thought it was mostly with the 6 cylinders. If I remember conrrectly, the stalling usually happens only at low speeds. I figured they'd have that nailed down by now. In most cases, the stalling has been resolved by re-programming the DME. Take it to the dealer. Sadly, he should be well aware of this issue.

Don't get discouraged. The X5 is a WONDERFUL and reliable vehicle. Sorry to hear you're having these problems. Hang in there, and keep us posted.

Juan

Hasn't happened in my 04 4.4 in 11k plus miles. No problems so far except service recalls. One Self Level Susp Inactive but rebooting fixed it :p

Good luck and see your dealer.

It happened to me twice a couple of weeks ago. Both times at slow speeds. I have 37k miles on the car, and I've had it almost two years. This was the first unscheduled stop at the dealer. The re-programmed the computer, and the problem seems to have gone away. We'll see.
