I just did this repair today and for the life of me could not remove the cover without breaking some tabs. It was either the black cover ring or the painted cover, or both. Oh well, at least the damage wasn't severe enough to ruin the reinstall.
On my repair, I noticed something else that I don't think was mentioned yet. The small steel spring sheared off a bit of the small plastic nipple that acts as the fulcrum pivot point and also holds it in place. When the folding is activated, the spring puts too much prying force onto this worn pivot and the spring falls out. After thinking about several possible fixes, I decided to just try bending the spring to lessened the leverage and it seems to be working. I'm crossing my finger and will have to see how long this will last. If this doesn't work, I'll either need to use some tape or drill a very fine hole at the corner of the microswitch and thread a fine wire through. That is, unless someone can tell me the part number for this switch. All in all, a pretty simple job as others mentioned with the exception of breaking some tabs. Thanks to all for the very helpful info. |

Folding mirror issue also experienced here (MY05 4.8is).
Here are a couple of tips that may save some time: 1) You can identify which mirror has the faulty switch by manually folding the mirrors in and out and listening for the microswtich. Comparing one side to the other should reveal which one doesn't 'click'. 2) I my case the the plastic pivot points were too worn down to reattach the metal spring. The microswitch itself is almost symmetric so I simply moved the spring to the opposite end of the microswtich and remounted the switch in reverse orientation. It's a bit fiddly getting the switch back in due to the wire routing, but can be done and works fine for me. |

sorry to resurrect an old thread but this is the problem I ran into today while trying to fix my mirrors:
The problem is, they fold but do not stay folded;easy fixable I thought...took both mirror covers out - made sure the metal pins are secured on the switch...but still having the same problem ... What could be wrong at this point?I wouldn't care about them that much but ever since my neighbor parks her car intentionally too close to mine(underground parking)it makes getting in and out so much harder with the mirror unfolded...folding them in would make a really big difference so if anyone has any suggestions on why even after securing the metal pins to the switch they still unfold, I would appreciate it.

So when you fold them in they don't stop and fold back out?
I have my own dilemma. My driver side is floppy, but folds in and out. Some times I have to help it fold back out because it'll just click and try to move, but always folds back in no problem. I took the motor apart and none of the casing were cracked nor did any of the gears appear to be stripped. It put it all back together and while the mirror is more solid now than it was before, it is still floppy. Anyone been here?
