Well-meaning advice but incorrect.

Not ALL fill plugs are like that - mine certainly isn't. Some ZF 6HP26 transmissions have the fill hole in the pan - and no fill hole on the trans body.

The folk talking about filling the trans from the larger hole in the pan are correct (for those with a ZF 6HP26 of this type).

That may be the case, but I'd bet his 4.8iS has in on the side.

It does.

I put mine in the air and put it in gear while filling then cycle thru the gears till full at temp and do fill level checks after driving and let it cool down to 40-50. I could probably get away with it at air temp over here to be honest but touching pavement here is as dangerous as cooking bacon naked.

Sounds like jayarc has a steel pan. I don't think you can generalise based on "4.8iS" or "3.0d" ... If the pan is steel and there are two "ports" on the pan - one being a drain hole and the other being a fill hole - there will be no fill port on the trans body. Unless a different pan has been added since the car left the factory...

If the pan is plastic, then the trans will have a fill port on the trans body...

Seems there's a bit of variation in what is fitted to what...

Well, my 04 4.8iS has a steel pan and guess what, there's a fill hole on the side. So there's that.
I think most 4.8iS have the side fill hole.

I can't thank you guys enough for the quick feedback. You saved my day, the trans filled up alright and I'm on my way. Last step is to fit the pesky rear air-to-spring coils in the tiny space you have to work with. Onward and upward, again thank you so much!

Hey snik I'm still curious to help others. I do have the side fill "plug" that I can see like in the original OP's photo BUT it looks like a PO tried to knock it loose with a chisel putting gouges in it at some point, failing. I'm not sure there's any way to get the side fill plug in your last photo off of there. I feel like I'd heard or seen that this may have been just a cap you can pop off but I tried a little and it didn't seem like it was... There are no indentations in my side cap to insert a tool to loosen it.

Even if it does, that is not the fill hole, and you cannot get the proper level going through the side. I have never seen people fill through the side when proper fill procedure is on bottom. But do you.

Literally says it's the fill hole on several docs.

So when you have steel pan and fill hole in the side what do you do? Still fill from the bottom?

Even ZF does it that way.
But yeah. Do you buddy.

Also, I couldn't source a new gasket and more importantly a new filter for the steel pan that was on mine, and I knew 100% the tranny was serviced before, so I put a plastic one one that came with gasket and filter, and I filled mine from the side, I have no issues.
