That is exactly it! Thanks for your help.

I've been debating doing a transmission fluid and filter change recently. I guess that debate is over...

Is the Febi Bilstein Automatic Transmission fluid sold through Pelican Parts a suitable replacement, or are there other reasonably priced options that are better?

Use only the ZF fluid Lifeguard 6. I just ordered a ZF trans fluid/filter kit today -- all ZF parts. Don't skimp on this fluid as this transmission is fussy (and stupid expensive).

Sorry to dig up a blast from the past. That's where mine is leaking from. Is it ok to pull it and change it and plug that cable back in. Or should I wait until it's time to do the fluid and filter again.
Basically, do I need inside access to change the seal sleeve?

You have to drop the entire transmission pan off to get at the sealing sleeve release tab/lever, so yes, you will be doing a fluid change (or at least a big top-up).

Awesome. Thanks for that wicked link.
I will be changing at least 1 solenoid too then, hoping that solves all issues.

I have a leaking sleeve and X case actuator seal. Smh. So I'm gonna change the gear wheels while at it since I don't know if they were ever done. Even tho I have no issues or trifecta lights.

Yes, that is a very interesting thread, and I don't even have a ZF transmission in my X5.

From that:
"Why was his invention so important? Well, in ZF’s case - compared with the 5-speed 5HP24 unit that it replaced - the 6HP26 had 29% fewer parts (down from 666 to 470), was 44mm shorter (reduced from 697mm to 653mm) and weighed 12% less, despite its higher torque capacity and increased ratio spread. Most of the world’s OEMs switched to 6-speed transmissions as a result."

I hope the guy made a lot of $$ from that great invention.

Alright guys I'm in a similar position as OP. I was having trouble trying to find the fill plug on my 04-06 with the GA6HP26Z transmission, XDrive etc...

I just finished up doing the mechatronic sleeve and the other rectangular sealing gasket that goes around the valve body, put the pan back on with new filter and saw this thread, started filling up the transmission through the larger pan hole that's recessed in, I found a channel to slip the tube in to and pumped ~2.5 L of lifeguard 6 in there and it started flowing back out. That can't be a complete fill. The only thing took off was the pan/valve body for mech sleeve service and put back together. I didn't track how much fluid came out unfortunately. I don't want to turn it on with low fluid, any suggestions on how to proceed.

I've heard folks talk about a "pressure pump" to do this. Let me know what you think thanks in advance for any ideas guys. Almost done with a 5 month project to keep my 4.8is alive.

You doing good so far. You can’t get it to take more fluid while it’s off. You must start it. You must put it in every gear and hold it there few seconds. Then you jump back underneath and pump more. Go fast. Because you have till about 30-50 deg C to finish the fill. During this time, fluid will start to leak out again. You wait a little till it drips, and close the hole up.

If it get hotter than this, fluid will expand like crazy, and you will not have a compete fill as it will leak out like crazy.

If you get past this temp, you will have to close the fill hole and wait till trans cools off. Then you will have to start the car before opening the fill hole and proceed.

Negative. Fill hole is on the side. Passenger side of tranny. Towards the back iirc.
You fill it till fluid runs out. Cap it. Start the car run thru the gears real quick while standing on the brake.
Back to park, monitor fluid temp and continue to fill.
Iirc to correctly read level temp must be between. 35-40c. Something like that.
Then once it's in that temp range and running, fill till fluid is leaking out the fill hole again. Then stop. Plug. Done.
If the fluid temp is outside that temperature range the level reading may be incorrect.
