Neighbor locked his keys in his X5.

Want to share this, happened on a Sunday (yesterday).

I was waxing my X5 yesterday and 2 guys approach me for help. They actually live about 5 blocks from me and walked to my house when the wife of one of the guys saw the X on my driveway.

Story is that they just picked up a 2005 3.0L X5 from a used car dealer yesterday. It was parked on thier driveway being loaded up for a roadtrip. This guy was putting CDs into the CD changer when his wife called him into the house. He closed the hatch with the keys inside. All other doors were locked, hatch was opened with the trunk button.

The used car dealer gave them ONLY 1 KEY. They called BMW Canada and were told that they had to have it towed to a dealer 'tomorrow' (Monday) as there was no service on a Sunday. CAA ( AAA in Canada) said they couldn't open an X5. The used car dealer told them to find another X5 owner because "the trunk unlock button of one X5 will unlock the trunk of another". Wierd huh, I told them that was BS but out of curiosity I go over to their place (its the neighborly thing to do - help out another X5 owner) with my key to prove it. Well it didn't work. I could see his keys in the trunk, his wife's purse in the front passenger seat, his wife was fuming mad that if stares could kill he'd be dead and buried. Just then the used car dealer calls to tell them they 'found' an extra key so they head over there in his brother's Honda.

MORAL of the STORY: Once again the trunk unlock button has gotten someone into trouble. Be wary of dealers who give you only 1 key.

I've done the same thing myself.........only once mind!!

Had to be taken home (about 10 miles away) to get the spare key and then all was resolved. Felt a complete idiot though!!

Lesson learned loud and clear, so I now ALWAYS unlock at least one door even if I'm only working in the trunk.

Personally I would also be EXTREMELY wary of only getting one key with a 2nd hand car. I'd want to know where the other key was and if it's lost get it disabled on the car systems so it won't work again, and then tell the salesperson that if they want a sale, they provide two keys at no extra cost to me!!

I know from personal experience that there are ways to get into the vehicle without having a key and without breaking a window (or doing any damage to the vehicle). I won't post how to do this on a public forum, for obvious reasons, but it can be done. If you know what you are doing, it takes less than 30 seconds to get in.

Yes...Ucrew is correct. he let me in on the secret a long time ago. It requires purchasing some items but hey, it works. And no damage..you can't beat that.

A replacement key from the dealer (the only place you can get one) runs around $175. You need to provide proof of ownership (title/registration) and a drivers license to the dealer in order to obtain the duplicate key.

Weasel will become famous soon enough
The key remote from any BMW with that style key can be set to work with any other BMW with that style key, but you have to do the key initialization process with the original key and as you know that requires getting to the ignition switch... not good in that situation. The mechanical part of the ramdom key won't work it naturally, but the electric part can be set to any BMW, just one car at a time though. I use that trick sometimes with my key to condemn a customers key as dead rather than the vehicles reciever ant. or something else electric. If their key won't initialize but mine will... done and done. Order a key.

And for a way to get into the vehicle without a key, as UCrewX5 said, it can be easily done without breaking anything if you know what you are doing.

Don't understand why so many people DON'T carry the plastic key in your wallet.
