My M3 had a sport button w/ throttle remapping.
Sport mode (on the X5) thru the shifter just changes shifting parameters, allowing higher revs for a given gear before shifting.
Neither button provides more power. The E60 M5 has the P500 mode for the additional power.

It isn't just the M models. My Z4 had throttle remapping on the sport button, and so it changed the throttle sensitivity (no more power, just more touchy). That Z4 sport button also changed the shift points on the SMG in auto mode, and changed the steering assist. Many owners debated whether that sport button added power, and it didn't, it just made it 'feel' faster. All interesting, and likely the basis for Mdorphin's confusion, but irrelevant when we are discussing X5 models.
