Replace Factory Amplifier with new amp's
I was wondering if anyone knew what type of output the stock (non dsp no nav) stereo on a 2004 X5 puts out to its amplifier. Assuming it just spat out a line leval output, i would love to pull out the factory amp and replace it with new amps for the front, back and sub so i can get the sound quality i want without sacrificing the look of my dash and all the included telephony and trip computer functions of the stock head unit. Cheers |

You can pick up a line out converter like an AudioControl LC6 or a JL Audio Cleansweep to make all the signals coming out from the BMW system useable line out signals.
Many people have swapped out the entire speaker system and replaced them with aftermarket components, while retaining the factory in dash stereo. It was the next thing I did after swapping out the wheels. |

Ok, I was kind of trying to avoid using the amp out because I have heard you loose signal quality.

Do the X5s without DSP have an external amp?

Yeah the do, its in the same place as the ones with dsp, just has one connector instead of the 3 that the dsp's have coming out.

Can you help by describing exactly where the factory amp in a non-DSP X5 is located?? |

I don't think they all have separate amps. My 2005 3.0d E53 is only 6 speaker, and doesn't have a separate amplifier.
It has a radio module, which is in the rear wheel well near the car battery. It doesnt have a separate amplifier. It is only 6 speaker. 2 mid-ranges in dash, 2 midbass in front doors, 2 midbass in rear doors. Sounds pretty poor actually. I burnt a test CD, then measured the sound coming out of the speakers. The 2 midranges in dash are also used as tweeters, and top out at around 8khz (which is terrible). I haven't been able to find line level outputs to wire into yet.I suspect that they might not be there. I was actually hoping to find someone who could lend me/donate a dead/unwanted radio module so that I could track down where we can find line level circuit traces, and patch in our own connections. Using speaker level outputs then bringing them back down to line level to feed into another aftermarket amp is not the way I think it should be done. My Radio part # is 65.12_6 972 662 IA:01.. HTH. Cheers, Scott. |

Strange, My 2005 non dsp diesel has a tweater in the upper door / window frame area so a total of 8 speakers. Compared to our other x5 which is a 2007 with the upgraded audio, the sound is muddy and lifeless. |

Yep. It is unusual, which is why it took me so many hours to figure out some of what was going on. My friend has an '05 X5 which has non DSP + 8 speakers (I think this might've been the norm).
Mine is also the Australian version. It's quite common for Australian delivered cars to have features deleted. I've heard of us exporting cars to the USA that sell for lower $ with more features, than what the local car sold for. Go figure! Cheers Scott. |
