i think it is normal to idle that low. Does the surge happen when the rpm is falling from 1000 to 500?

I don't think that is normal. I haven't had that happen to me before but I sometimes have seen the x5 surge while it is dropping from 1000 to 600 rpm.

I am also noticing a surging mostly when I am stopped at a stoplight. It is a constant surging and I don't think it is normal because this wasn't happening when I got the vehicle a year ago. I thought it might have something to do with the cold weather we are having but it did not do this last year. I have looked and when it is doing this there is no significant RPM changes showing. I plan on going in for service sometime in the next couple of months and will have them check this out.

Did you ever find out what this surging was? I have surging only at start up and while cold. Seems to go away once the engine is warmed up.

Anybody think the surging could be due to a misfiring coil? Would a bad coil cause a check engine light?

My surge is VERY minor and only happens when I do a cold start.
