Rack and Pinion problem?

Hello:

New to the forum. Did some searches but thought I ask anyway.

My 2002 4.4 X5 (72,xxx miles) binds up or get sticky when turning hard to the left. It becomes difficult to turn and almost seems to stick. Brought it to a local guy who thinks 90% it is the Rack and Pinion. 10% the Steering Pump. Suggests to replace both. Anybody have this same problem or have this done? Anybody do-it-yourself out their?

Thanks!!!

Not a common problem, at least not one I have seen discussed.

I would think myself that the rack is more likely than the pump, since you only have the problem in one direction.

I have been told the same. Not a common problem and most likely not the pump since the problem persists only in one direction.

I have done some searches and find prices for the steering rack to be all over the place. Dealer quotes.... crazy......

I would get the rack changed before the pump, not both...

And I would suspect the rack as well.
